This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Mars, the planetary romance rpg

GMS is behind this one, though apparently Lizard whom I recall as being a solid guy did much of the actual writing, it's a planetary romance rpg and so a much-neglected genre.

Anyone know more about it or have an interest in the genre?

I know nothing about the game but I love John Carter of Mars and books of that ilk. However, I just can't get into it from an RPG point of view. I think it is the whole "Know too much about Mars today" kind of thing crossed with my love of sci-fi. The genre seems too little in sci-fi and you have to believe in a green Mars. Like I said though, I love it for reading purposes. It might help that I got into the genre as a young boy when it seemed like "Yeah, maybe" but now its more like "Just got to forget too much". That is a rough place to be in for an RPG setting.

YMMV,
Bill

It's been years since I read them, but I was a big fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars and Venus books. I'm curious to hear what they come up with, but not to the point that I'd make a purchase blind.

I downloaded the preview.  It looks neat, but I'm not excited about d20 Modern.  I'd be much more interested if it used a different system.

Still, it looks very flavorful and true to source from what I've seen.

I was going to ask for a link, but it's d20 Modern? Darn.

I dig Jorune, so yeah I am interested in this setting :D

Well, I understand that it was close enough in scope to the John Carter novels for an ill-intentioned nogoodik to cause trouble between Adamant and the Burroughs estate (hence the delayed release date). So. . . I suspect that if you like John Carter, Gareth's Mars will have a lot of the good stuff for you.

Same here. Only reason why I'm not getting it.

I'm interested in it - I remember the Dragon magazine Iron Lords of Jupiter game that Lizard wrote, and it's got me interested in this as well.

I'd put up with Mo-Dern if it's a comprehensive treatment of Burroughsesque Mars. That's far and away my favorite genre/environment to play in. One of these days, if I play hard enough, I'll just wake up there, like John Carter.

That will be a great day.

Oblivious Gamer: I like to play games: wargames, role-playing games.
EC: My cousin killed himself because of role-playing games.
OG: Jesus, what was he playing? Rifts?

I strongly suspect this will be the case, and I've considered picking it up just for the setting/flavor.

Here's a link to the free preview on RPGnow for anyone interested: http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=6786

I've given this some though too, actually. My solution: move the solar system 10,000+ into the future and have mars as a defunct and dying terraform project. None of the inhabitants have to know this, however, and this rational can be used to explain all the crazy monsters nd just about everything else, including the dwindling air supply.
In fact, I'm thinking of using just such a rational to construct a pre-mariner style sci fi solar system. The earth has been wrecked by atomic war, and is, at the start of the game, only a century two into recoverey, and only a couple of decades in space. When the earthers get into space, they find a swampy, water-logged venus, a crazy desert mars, and whatever the hell else you want. One added bonus to this is the solar system would be loaded with mystery tech, but instead of being the product of alien tech, like in 2001, it is the product of a fallen and only vaguly remembred human supertech civilization.
I'd use true20 though.

This is probably the best rationale I have seen. Outside of the standard of the genre but still, a good way to bring it into an RPG setting I could stomach.

Thanks,

You're very welcome. I'd love to develop the setting as a full on product- but, sadly, I have been accepted into grad school and there will be no time for fun for the next five years or so.
