This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Manimal lives!

According to Wikipedia...

In September 2012, it was reported that Sony Pictures Animation is developing a live-action/CGI film based on Manimal. The series' creator and producer, Glen A. Larson, is once again attached as a pro*ducer.

Ha! Awesome sauce.

Quote from: talysman;664642On the other hand, I kind of liked Dark Angel, which is almost exactly what the OP suggests. Although most of the gene-spliced animals -- including Jessica Alba -- look entirely human. Also, they aren't shape-shifters, like Manimal.
This is a very important point, here.

Manimal is not a hybrid, but a full shapeshifter, and Dark Angel may officcially be genespliced animals, but i saw several episisodes, and not even once i saw one that did not look fully human.

So what is Op really going for?
Is Furry and Scaly really so taboo that one cannot mention it without getting into some stereotype that is either too silly or too savage?
I may not dislike D&D any longer, but I still dislike the Chaos-Lawful/Evil-Good alignment system, as well as the level system.

Wow.  He basically was the producer behind a lot of television in the 70s and 80s:  original Battlestar Galactica, BJ and the Bear, Sheriff Lobo, Knight Rider, Buck Rodgers, and The Fall Guy.  And knowing his output, I'm probably missing a lot, but those are the ones I know just off the top of my head.

That, and the Man from Atlantis, though the latter was a much better series than Manimal.

It's like they were afraid to call it "Aquaman"

How did I ever miss this......gem?

It could have been really good --well, for a series from that era, anyway-- but since it tanked it freed up Patrick Duffy to be in Dallas.

The stillborn Aquaman series from the WB was surprisingly good, I thought, if you like that sort of thing.

Explicitly inhuman gene-hybrids show up in the second season of Dark Angel, btw.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

One book on bad TV shows had an entire chapter on "the curse of Manimal", which covered the '80s time period when some NBC exec got a bug up his butt about superhumans in somewhat prosaic adventures. Manimal. Man from Atlantis. The Powers of Matthew Star. Misfits of Science. For some reason, the letter "M" factored into this heavily.

Just Another Snake Cult

There was an episode of the low-budget 90's syndicated super-hero show Nightman where Nightman teamed up with an old Manimal and Manimal's hot daughter, who had inherited his powers.

Objectively, it was crap, but it was sorta cool how it hinted at an entire larger "Universe" of TV semi-super-heroes.

Possible, i only managed to see a few episodes, but in the ones i saw, they only had explicitly inuman speed, senses and savagery ... and explicitly human looks, and then i gave up on looking at it.

There was a whole lot of talk about how inhuman those were ... but they still looked human indeed, to me ...

Did i perhaps see a different Dark Angel than you, even?

StormBringer

Quote from: One Horse Town;664547Oh yes, that wonderfully short-lived hokey tv show from yesteryear.

Well, i figure that with a twist or two it might make an awesome game.

Dystopian future maybe?

Human/animal DNA splices to give humies animal characteristics in order to fight/engage in crime!

My guy is going to have chameleon skin, shark teeth and slug mucus.

Any other settings you can imagine for this?
Twiddle some numbers, you could actually pull this off in CyberPunk 2020.  There are all kinds of chrome and augments that mimic that sort of body mod, and the Lo Teks from Johnny Mnemonic (the short story) sets the precedent for a booster gang that focusses on those kinds of alterations.  Maybe throttle back on the humanity losses and it would work out pretty well.
