This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: RPGPunditHey all,

Wondering if anyone has any good resources for running a chinese-historical campaign; specifically one set in the Three Kingdoms period, but I'm looking for anything at all that could be juicy/useful for the chinese campaign.

i'm something of a sinologist. what sort of books are you looking for? anthropological? historical? fantastical? literary? archaeological? any ideas you want to bounce, i'd love to talk about han dynasty china :)

edit: oh, and there were some roman embassies with china at the time. this was at the very beginning of the silk road. it might be interesting to play as westerners coming in, instead of chinese.
at the moment of sacrifice let no blood be spilled!

There weren't any actual "roman embassies" at that time, save possibly one. It appears that sometime in 170s or 80s a roman delegation did manage to arrive in Luoyang sent by either Antoninus Pius or Marcus Aurelius; only we don't have any surviving roman records of this expedition, only chinese.

But they disappeared into history, and before and after that the two empires had no significant political contact.

But, as you say, the silk road was opening up and there was a lot of contact at the level of merchants!

no one important

Zhongwen.com is a good online Chinese-English/English-Chinese dictionary.

While it's not online, and it's later than Three Kingdoms, China's Golden Age is a great book full of details about everyday life in historical (Tang Dynasty: 618-907 A.D.) China.
Not as dumb as I look, sound, or best testing indicates.  Awful close, though.

Thanks, Nick. Now we're on the right track...
