This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: James Gillen;478034At the same time, what I DON'T like about D&D and other "hit point" games is that non-lethal combat methods are either impossible or not obvious, so that the "they beat you unconscious and you wake up tied to a stake" out is not feasible in game terms let alone story terms.

Actually, in 4e D&D all hit point damage above 0 hp represents non-lethal/subdual damage, and you can non-lethally KO a foe just by declaring such when you reduce him to 0 hp.  If they have Healing Surges left they can wake up on full hp 5 minutes later.

Quote from: Kyle Aaron;478038From a realism point of view, of course it's nonsense. But in a game with ascending hit points we needn't worry too much about realism.

Well, that and no rules system in the world can handle unconsciousness realistically.

In the real world, a few punches can kill you.  Just ask the family of the 19 year old that died here last week when he got into a fight with a friend.

If a game was realistic, that "knockout" blow would likely end up with the PC getting brain damage assuming he survived the internal bleeding from the subdermal hematoma.  The good news is - the wizard survived the goblin fight.  The bad news - he lost the sight in one eye when the blow knocked his optic nerve loose, his speech is slurred after that post-battle aneurysm, and he has chronic headaches from the skull fractures.

Daedalus

Well the game ended up dying because of the DM's schedule so it worked out for the best.

I have replaced it for a Conan based Barbarians of Lemuria game.   So it all works out.

Now with that and the other games I am getting involved with, my gaming card is filling up even more so.

Actually, that sounds like an excellent turn of events. I've only heard good things about BoL.

Good luck with your new campaign, and if you feel like it, let us know how it comes along.
