Quote from: bottgOnly a small thread necro, but Maelstrom has been re-released at last!
It is only available from RPGNow:

but i am interested in ideas for support/extra material, and will also be looking for playtesters in the near future.

That's awesome news, and an awesome game. I still have my original copy.
What I'd strongly suggest is that the support material have to do with details about Elizabethan/renaissance culture and setting. See movies like Capitan Alatriste or Elizabeth for inspiration, plus anything shakespeare ever wrote.

Stats for guns would be nice...
I vaguely remember this game. I remember being disappointed that there were no orcs (:p), but thinking that it was pretty cool nonetheless.
Good to see that it's available again! I'm going to pick it up next time I shop for pdfs ...
I am happy to have re-published this game, as i was a huge fan myself when it first came out.
As far as the support material goes, i am most of the way through a companion, although it will still need illustrating, playtesting etc. It will contain rules for guns, more livings, more magic rules, supernatural creatures, name lists, price lists, and a huge pile of setting material. There will also be some paper miniatures and other play aids.
I am also working on various freebies, including an adventure, maps etc
Any more ideas, requests etc are welcome. This is a great game, and despite its age, deserves to be played.
Is the new pdf version identical to the original book or has it had some alterations?
Just asking as I still have a copy of the original.
Vadrus
The new pdf is the same as the original book. It has been scanned, OCR'd, and re-assembled, so there may be some tiny formatting changes in one or two places, but otherwise, the same.
I din't want to alter anything, because i wanted it to be the original.
Out of interest, how did you manage to get the rights to it? And is Alexander Scott involved in the revival at all?
I actually got the right by ringing up puffin and asking! It has cost a fair bit of money, and taken more than a year but i think it will be worth it.
The original author is only involved by giving his permission. He is a senior academic a university now, so presumably has other things on his mind!
Yes, stats for guns and other equipment could help.

Really, what is he doing now? I guess I'm not surprised.
As i understand it, he is a mathematician. And i am not suprised either. Given that he wrote this, at that early era, whilst still at school is incredibly impressive.
Yeah, I think James Wallis mentioned something like that over on the Big Purple.
I am intrigued as to why Puffin wanted so much money for license.
I interviewed the author a few years back, for Imagonem. I uploaded the file here (http://draug.no/Pages%20from%20Imagonem_31_web.pdf). The intro is in Norwegian, but the interview itself is in English.

How much did it cost you, if you don't mind me asking?
A+ for quoting the Desperate Bicycles. :D
Not only a great game but what a great cover also - I picked it up all those years ago and thought 'I wanna play that guy'.
As far as the license payment goes, i would rather not say (at least in public)!
I would like to put a link to that article on my Maelstrom pages though, if it OK with you Matthijs?
As i have said, there will be a companion, which should hopefully address some of the rules issues, and expand things a bit, but otherwise i think the rules are pretty solid.

Sure! In fact, it's probably best if you just copy the file over to your own server - I might delete it from mine at some point in the future.
Would it be worth making the herb guide system-less, expanding it, and selling it as a seperate product?
I would have to check the license and with the original publishers. I have a feeling they would say no, but it is worth a shot. It has certainly inspired quite a few professional and amateur herb guides!
