This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: RPGPundit;438313Well, in the sense that I have a basic -level understanding of how baseball is played, yes.  The average uruguayan would have as much clue about baseball as the average resident of Kansas would about Cricket.

RPGPundit

That is exactly what I meant, Pundit! You may not be knowledgeable, but you have a basic understanding. Now here in New England, we are almost as hockey crazy as Canadians, but even in Kansas they have a basic understanding of the game. That's all that's required.

I can't believe how many people ask me this! I thought it was common knowledge. The game was originally called just "The Tools of Ignorance", but so many people asked I had to put in the "A Baseball RPG" subtitle.

The 'tools of ignorance" are the catcher's equipment - glove, mask/helmet, and pads. When one goes out to catch a game, one 'dons the tools of ignorance.' The phrase was coined back in the 1920s by a catcher for the Washington Senators - he was the regular catcher for the immortal Walter Johnson - who also happened to be a lawyer admitted before the Supreme Court. The phrase is, of course, ironic, because the catcher is almost always the smartest man on the team.

That's interesting thanks for explaining that.  I have never heard that before and I dont think its a commonly used term anymore.

I am sure most of my friends that are my age have never heard the term

I know I'm old, Daedalus! No need to rub it in! Why, back in my day, when men were men and women were women. and we all had a brain the size of a walnut, and we wanted to play baseball, we had to use rocks! And we didn't have your fancy, pre-made rocks! We had to make them ourselves ex nihilo! And we liked it! :D

Aos

You must be really, really, really, really, really* fucking old, because I've never heard of it either. I thought it was a game about undergraduates.

Don't be silly, Aos! Undergrads have no tools! They are no more a tool-using creature than a cow is.

And yes I am that old.

I must necro this thread for a few reasons:

1. A friend bought me a copy of the PDF for this and I must say I am impressed :) It's missing a few things that I would have liked to have seen...effects of the ballpark such as wall distances, field conditions and size of the foul territory, and weather effects, but these are things that could be easily (well maybe not easy but doable) provided by fan innovations.

2. I am a gigantic baseball fan AND a collector of baseball board games such as APBA, Strat-O-Matic, Replay etc. and so of course this was an idea I had to have in my collection :) I plan to acquire a print copy as soon as possible.

3. I posted a link to your website to the Table Top Sports forum on Delphi. While many of those folks have probably never even heard of RPGs, some have, and maybe I can get you a few more sales :)

Also downloaded the fan-made MLB players. We have a Replay baseball league and the guys will find this game interesting :) I located the players that are on our teams (I have only 8, so will have to rate the others).

Thanks for designing this! I think it may become a good "pick-up" game for us :)

Benoist

I can't even understand the rules of the Baseball game. :D

What I see is a bunch of dudes running around a square to score points, and trying to get a home run once in a while. Seriously. Beyond that, I'm hopeless I think.

Marleycat

Let me get this straight you made a RPG about baseball? Being a huge baseball fan I think it's great of course but how do it work?

(My brothers always took me to baseball games I would do the score thing you do to really stay interested when nothing much happened).
Don\'t mess with cats we kill wizards in one blow.;)

(My brothers always took me to baseball games I would do the score thing you do to really stay interested when nothing much happened). I went to alot of games in San Francisco, Oakland and Seattle you can't convince me to go Kaufman (here in Kansas City) because the weather here is unbearable to watch baseball in my opinion. I'd rather just stay at home with the AC on and catch it on MLBTV.:)

As a Red Sox fan born a block from Fenway, I am well aware of the effect park and playing field shape have on the game - the phrase "Fenway giveth, and Fenway taketh away" is often on my lips - as well as weather. I started blocking out these modifiers, but dropped it in favor of retaining the simplicity of the internal simulation as given. It would have required additional steps in resolution for a small difference in results. It may have been best to place these changes in an Optional Rules section for those who like their simulation more exact, but I have hopes some fan may pick up the ball and come up with a better solution. :D

Cool! When I was a kid, my brother and a buddy and I played Cadaco All Star
Baseball and loved it. I learned how to decode the disks, and we ultimately created our own teams and players all coded onto the disks, and even complete nations with maps and cities, and did league role-play. Tools of Ignorance is a lineal descendant of this. :D

Awesome! I just put them up last week! Antonio is working on a board game derived somewhat from ToI for solo or group play.
