This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[Gaming scene] Any active duty military here

It's been almost 20 years since I was in the military, and I'm curious to know what the gaming scene/availability is currently, particularly in those areas that are overseas (Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc).

When I was in, there was a bookstore that carried D&D and some Vampire stuff, but that was it.  Does AAFES still carry gaming stuff?  And do soldiers still game?  I was surprised by how many of us were gamers--higher than the general population I'd guess.

What about deployed?  Do you have time to get your fix in when on deployment?

Thanks in advance.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

I'm not in the military, but when we released Diaspora we immediately got a request for a PDF version for use by a US unit deployed in Afghanistan as they were bored with the games already on site. So I know at least one group was playing FATE games. Later we shipped hardcopies to some Canadians as part of a tabletop gaming package.

I suspect the gaming is going strong.

AAFES in korea still had some gaming stuff the last time I was over there, which was 2009, but it was mostly D20 and a little 4e stuff.

Here in Afghanistan now, at my site there's not much going on, but I overheard some people at BAF talking about their game the last time I stopped in, so statistically, there must be a lot if I can hear about it in a couple hour passthrough.

Back in the rear, most my my game group was or is in.  Of the base 5 of us that have been around for the last 10 years or so, three of us are still active.

So you're in Afghanistan now?  Not to go off topic, but do you have an address so I can send a care package?  I was in the process anyway, but this just makes it easy.  At least I would know it would go to gamers.

Back on the main topic, there's some support for it while deployed as well.  When I was over here in 2002, I organized a large group game in my company that had the BC and CSM's support, we even played in the Task Force conference room after hours.

They appreciated that we were doing something more... stimulating?  than sitting around the tents bitching about the food.  With nothing else to do, there were a lot of people who never expressed any interest in gaming in the rear who took part in a twice weekly game.  That was when Kandahar was just a collection of bombed-out buildings and tents, so I'm sure there's still a healthy set of gamers when there's better facilities available.
