I really like the book. It's rich with stuff that interests me. Lots of flavorful content.
My only hangup that prevents me from embracing the system whole hog, is the Magister class......
I miss the traditional D&D Magic User / Wizard / Sorcerer. The Magister is essentially a Summoner, that has replaced the D&D Arcane spell caster. I understand that there is a historical basis, such as the Lesser and Greater keys of Solomon. I'm just not that fond of having a full blown Summoner PC at my table. I wouldn't mind running a crusade campaign against a powerful Summoner, but I don't want my PC's to be Summoners.
Well, for starters I'd ask what are your issues with a "summoner" as you put it?
Is it a power level thing? A good vs evil thing?
Hello there! Finally got my copy of Lion & Dragon, and I love it so far - can't wait to play it!
Sorry if I posted in a wrong thread!
I have a question regarding fighter's special ability.
It says "When fighting multiple opponents of 1 level/HD, Fighters can attack a number of opponents equal to their level"
So, I'm a little bit lost about "1 level/HD" thing. For example, my 3rd level Fighter is fighting 3 frogmen knights (5d6 HD), 3 rat-men (3d6 HD) and 3 skeletons (1d6 HD). All foes are within 10' of the Fighter.
Can I use fighter's special ability to:
1) attack 3 frogmen knights in one round?
2) attack 3 rat-men in one round?
3) attack 3 skeletons in one round?
4) attack 2 rat-men (higher level - 3d3 HD) and one skeleton (lower level - 1d6 HD) in one round? Apparently in this particular situation it is not possible, right?
Thank you! I am new to the whole OSR thing and before that tried only non-OSR storytelling rpgs like "Dungeon world" and "Fate Core", but I really want to try out the true OSR RPG!
Upd: oh, figured that out. Sorry for posting in the wrong forum section though((
It's odd to me that this isn't on the RPG part of the board.

Not speaking for Razor, but personally it is a "pain in the ass" thing based on action economy. One summoner with combat minions can absolutely bog the game down on that players turn.
I don't know if that is Razors deal, but I have a rather allergic reaction to them myself.
I do like the idea of the magical skills that magisters have, but in SWN terms I think I'd have it basically be a specialized version of Contact. Which it may be in L&D, I don't know.

I'm guessing you worked that out, but just to clear it up, he would be able to either do his normal attack against the enemy of choice, or you can do one attack each on the three skeletons.

It is now!
Magister
Does the Magister start with a Magic Skill at level one?
( astrology, cures, banishing, etc)
Does he only get the Languages Lore and Summoning?
I don't see anything on pages 16-17 that state that he gets a Magical Skill.
Or at Level 1 you roll twice on the chart and hope to get 3-5 or chose to not roll and just pick the advance you want?( page 14)

The magical skill he starts with IS Summoning. He doesn't automatically start with another, but he might roll one on the table.
So to review: he gets Languages Lore and Summoning, AND he gets to roll twice on the table or pick once from the table.
Hi RPGPundit,
Thanks for your Dark Albion and Lion and Dragon books, o have been enjoying reading them and look forward to running a game in the setting.
I'm British and interested in medieval history and so it was just at what I was waiting for.
I have a question about skills progression. The classes each have their own background skills.
How would you handle other non combat and non spells related skills bonuses?
I'm thinking of skills such as track, intimidation, hide etc.
Should these skills bonuses increase with each new level?

Okay, but the summoning the Magister is capable of isn't like WoW summoning. He isn't popping out minions during combat, or even during encounters, nor does he have a bandolier of pokemon monsters to throw at any challenge that comes along. It's more like contacting a powerful NPC that may be able to help you do something, but will also come with consequences. Summoning is powerful but risky and therefore an inherently limited commodity.
Thank goodness for that.

Hi Joe! Thank you!
Regarding other skills: for the most part, characters will just roll a D20 plus the relevant ability score bonus. "Track" is based on the Wilderness Lore skill. "hide" is the Stealth skill.
Intimidation and all other social "skills" are handled by Reaction Rolls, explained on p.74. OSR games don't have social skllls you can just pump points into.
Skill bonuses in the official rules only go up when a character gets a result on his advancement table that would indicate a skill going up.
However, you could, if you wanted, allow a character who studied/practiced a skill in the game for a very long time (and possibly paid for instruction) to get a +1 in the skill.
Got it , thanks for the clarification.
Cymri and Scots don't start with Background Skills, correct?
Quote from: MattyHelms;1116081Cymri and Scots don't start with Background Skills, correct?
They do, though if the Scots or Cymri were not raised in regular culture the GM could choose to give them specific background skills related to their origin. Cymri would probably get Urban Lore. Scots would get either farming or military (depending if they were raised as commoners or as mercenaries).
