This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Limbo Fever D20 Design

OK, so here's my challenge.  I talked to Kory Curtis himself, and he totally gave his permission to do a D20 version of the Limbo Fever game.  Excellent!!  (See here and here for more.)

Here's what Cornell Richardson had to say about it:

Quote"I'm helping him playtest his game Limbo Fever, which is all about the choices contestants in a dance competition face; basically, it all comes down to the question "how low can you go?". We're also using it to explore some heavy personal stuff. There was a moment where my Venezuelan limbo king dealt with his alternative sexuality, which was really a powerful moment at our table. I didn't see the game going that way, but the Professor threw it in there. That's the great thing about our Forge and indie games—unlike some other systems . . . we can introduce and explore different "themes" to our games any time we want!"

So who wants to help write it?  I think probably I should use True20 for it, because that's the best system evar, and could totally handle this.  Ideas?

Sosthenes

Don't. A game like this can only be done with all the tactical combat options D&D 3E (or the SRD) offers. Any diluted version will take all the machismo out of limbo and leave it limp-o.

For a true D20 adaption, you need to provide about 6 core clases, change some of the skills and adapt the feat and combat systems for the task. Then you need to spruce up the back story a bit and tell us more about the reasons behind the Limbo Fever Wars. And we need a good map.

Damnit.  You're totally right.

OK, so here's how about these as core classes:
Mambo King (Dex),
Hustler (Wis),
Dirty Dancer (Cha),
Swinger (Str),
Ballroom Master (Int).

The point isn't to specialize in a dance but to give a general feel and stereotypes.

Maybe two others?

Break dancer (dex)
Crunk(sp?)   (char)

You should totally be able to take a dance of opportunity all over someone.

I'm hip to this.  But Mambo King as dex?  Please, look at this man and tell me he isn't down with the Con. He can bend under the pole all....night....long!

EDIT: Whew. Is it hot in here or is it just this game? :hibachi:

GAH! You guys are making me think of the breakdance fighting scene from Zoolander. Bastards.

See how great this is!!  Like most games, the strength of Limbo Fever is in the concept.  What I hate is how it's married to the unbalanced, pig-dog-ish hippy mechanics of Kory Curtis' mechanics.  I mean, we don't want this terrific concept wasted like his previous Dragon-Bimbos, do we?

So, more on classes:

I'll totally buy Mambo King as Con-based.  The Mambo King is the unbreakable core of LF -- the Cuban colossus which endures all takers.  I'd say this is the most straightforward class: d12 BP base ("Bend Points"), and +1 BDB / level ("Base Dance Bonus").

The Hustler is the Wis-based street-smart nightclub dancer.  This is the class to pick to get the edge on your opponent, by finding out his weaknesses, bribing the DJ, or just going with your Sneak Step.

The Dirty Dancer is the Cha-based master of the forbidden dance of love.  You have to score a bunch of points to use those special abilities, but they're clearly worth it.

The Swinger is the Str-based show-off partner dancer -- whether big-band swing or otherwise.  I think this one should have a bunch of bonus feats.

The Ballroom Master is the Int-based expert who knows the steps to every dance, the beat to every song.  While they might not have the highest BDB, they'll never take penalties for an unfamiliar dance or be taken by surprise.

The Breakdancer is the Dex-based acrobatic dancer of any sort.  Master of maneuver and defense, and not dependent on partner bonuses like the Swinger or Ballroom Master.

(I'm not sure what the "Crunk" is supposed to be.)

Whenever a word makes me feel both confused and old I just look it up.
Quotecrunk -  A cliched and overused hiphop term that has been beat to death more than "Bling-Bling" and "Shizzle". It means to get crazy and drunk. The term lost it's "cool" factor like two years ago, but that doesn't stop wiggers and wanna be gangstas from using the the term as much as possible.

Yo! We be all blinged out and getting crunk up in this club fo sho! (Translation: I'm a total fucking idiot, and don't know how stupid I sound!)
So I guess it's a word that the kids were using. Stale-dated trendy word? Sounds rad! As to what the class actually does, I guess it's sort of like the equivalent to a Wild Mage?  You roll on a random table to see what action is taken such as limboing under the bar, highjumping over the bar, groping the nearst dancer (be it friend or foe), or just wandering over to the bar for another round of shooters.

I believe he may have mistaken crunk for krumping or klowning (forms of dance recorded in the documentary Rize.)

I just wonder whether this would be a PC class or a monster...

Dancing clowns? That seems to be moving out of the core latin genre? Slate that sucker for the splatbook "White on Black: A Guidebook to Getting Jiggy in Compton".  I've got the JPG proof for the book cover, but don't have a handy spot to upload it right now. Anyone want it in their email box? It clocks in at about 320Kb.

Somehow we should try to get the extra-dimensional Limbo into the game...
