This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Yep. No prerequisites.

To provide some contrast, let's go with Oracle.

Level 3

So, after being a mundane guide, finding a deeper evil in the world, and squiring to a mighty hero, Helmut decides to become a metaphysical guide with visions of the future.

At level 3, Helmut takes Oracle as his Expert Path. There is yet another optional story development chart and I get:

QuoteA near-death experience opened your body to supernatural entities. You believe (or hope) these entities are the gods, but the things you sometimes say when possessed by these beings have made you question your beliefs.

That certainly explains the shift of focus :) Helmut gets:

Attributes Increase two by 1
Characteristics Health +3, Power +1
Languages and Professions You can speak another language or add a profession.
Magic You discover one tradition associated with your religion, as shown on the Religious Traditions table in Chapter 3, or you learn one spell.
Divine Ecstasy You can use an action to enter a state of divine ecstasy that lasts for 1 minute. You gain the following benefits for the duration:
• You gain a +10 bonus to Health.
• You cannot become charmed, compelled, or frightened.
• You cannot gain Insanity.
• You make Intellect, Will, and Perception attack rolls and challenge rolls with 1 boon.

When this effect ends, you must get a success on a Will challenge roll or gain 1 Insanity.

You can use this talent a number of times equal to your Power. You replenish your uses when you complete a rest.

I am going with Cult of the New God as the forces at work behind Helmut's new found power, so I can Celestial , Life or Theurgy. I go with Celestial as I like the idea of being a light in the dark.

I get 1 rank 0 spell when I learn the tradition and I can choose Burning Beam or Light. I take the later as I see Helmut still being a mostly melee fighter. With Power 1, I can cast it twice a day.

And all I got to say is +10 Health! Helmut can withstand any pain :)

Levels 4, 5 and 6 consist of additional bonuses based on my decisions to date, so I will do each in turn.

Level 4
At this level, my ancestry gives me another benefit. In this case, its:

Characteristics Health +6
You either learn one spell or gain Shake it Off.
Shake it Off: You can use an action to heal damage equal to your healing rate and remove one of the following afflictions: fatigued, impaired, or poisoned. Once you use this talent, you cannot use it again until after you complete a rest.

I like how being a Dwarf (and a Warrior) will continue to help the PC be tough, even though he is now an Oracle.

For interests sake, though I take a rank 1 Celestial spell instead, Persistent Light. As a rank 1 spell, I can only do it once a day. I use the opportunity to exchange Light with Burning Beam.

Level 5

At this level, my Novice path provides another benefit. In this case, its:

Characteristics Defense +1, Health +5
Combat Expertise When you use an action to attack with a weapon, you either deal 1d6 extra damage with that attack or make another attack against a different target at any point before the end of your turn.

Level 6

At this level, my Expert path provides another benefit. In this case, its:

Characteristics Health +3
Magic You learn one spell.
Commune with the Gods When you use Divine Ecstasy, you can choose to go into a trance. If you concentrate until the effect ends, you can ask the supernatural presence up to three questions that can be answered with a yes, no, or maybe. You then make a Will challenge roll with 1 bane. On a success, the GM must answer you truthfully. On a failure, you gain 1 Insanity.

For magic, I choose Rainbow Burst in which Helmut bewilders his opponents with visions of the future.

To finish this up, I am having Helmut take Infiltrator.

Level 7

After becoming a warrior for the guiding light, he decides to become the light within, hiding amongst those he hunts before vanquishing them.

He gets:

Attributes Increase three by 1
Characteristics Perception +1, Health +3
Languages and Professions You can speak another language or add a criminal profession.
Faceless You can attempt to hide anywhere; you can be observed and you do not have to be in a heavily obscured are or three-quarters covered. You remain hidden from using this talent until you use an action or a triggered action, after which you must wait at least 1 minute before you can use this talent again.

While you are hidden, people you talk to cannot remember details about you 1 minute after the conversation ends and totally forget having spoken to you 1 hour after the conversation ends.

Finally, during the first round of any combat in which you are hidden, you make attack rolls and challenge rolls with 1 boon. If you take a fast turn during this round, you can use an action and move.

In that case, he looks like:

Name: Helmut
Ancestry: Dwarf
Level: 7
Paths: Warrior (Novice), Oracle (Expert), Infiltrator (Master)
Strength 12(+2), Agility 10(-), Intellect 12(+2), Will 12(+2)

attack you make.

In that case, he looks like:

Name: Helmut
Ancestry: Dwarf

So, that's it. I purposively went for diverse character, but the mechanics still worked well to create an interesting concept. SotDL takes D&D5e's bounded accuracy to the extreme, with ever modifier remaining important through all levels. He ends up being a warrior who hunts down and infiltrates evil cults and reveals himself with a burst of righteous light and furore.

I hope that was insightful. At level 1, he is a WFRP level nobody. At level 10, he a is mid-level D&D PC capable of some awesome.

Kamard

This seems to be a pretty cool game. I alway like mechanics that support character development and vice-versa, and these seem to do it in spades.

Please sir, may I have another?
