This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

This is going to be the Fantasy version of Starblazer Adventures, apparently. I wasn't involved in any playtest or anything like that, so what little buzz I got hold of is kind of dubious but it sounds like it's going to be given the same SA treatment.

Unfortunately, complete with being ridiculously late.

C7 dudes: if you say "around christmas", then people want it at Christmas.

Does that include that it is based on another Brit comic book?

Same comic, 'Starblazer'.

From the Almighty Wikipedia:

The Anglerre Series. This series of issues set in the fantasy kingdom of Anglerre follows the royal family and their conflict against various aggressors. The first appearance, in issue 200 of Prince Veyne was followed by a later issue which was a prequel showing Veyne's father, King Iagon. King Iagon had been vaguely referred to in Issue 200, both by saying that Veyne had just ascended to the throne on the death of his father, and a ship named the 'Royal Iagon'. Much of the storyline of the Royal House of Anglerre is entwined with the god Vishena and the Demon Sword, Cerastes, who will make its user invincible, but will also kill its wielder after an unspecified period of time. The nature of Anglerre's opponents seems to make heavy use of Demons. A recurring character within this series is that of Myrdan, a seemingly immortal figure of unspecified power who could said to have been inspired by both Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings and King Arthur's court adviser, Merlin. In the issue Demon Sword, Myrdan at one point seems to merge with Vishena, which hints that he could be an avatar of the god.

So no one here actually had playtest experiences with it? Or anything else to say about it from a point of view of actually having direct knowledge?

Do Cubicle 7 use NDA for playtesters?

RPGPundit

That's a good point, they do. But well, maybe some C7 people will want to come on here and talk about it/answer questions about it.

Is this going to be a fantasy game based on the fantasy stories within the Starblazer comics (the comic was a mix of science fiction and fantasy stories) or a whole new world and game?

Both. I believe they are generating two or three campaign worlds...Anglerre, a D&D-esque world, and I think a dark fantasy/swords and sorcery type world. Also, if it's anything like Starblazer Adventures, you should be able to use the book to generate your own campaign worlds.

I sent the thread to the lead writer, but she's swamped with editing the book for publication.

Here's the rpg.net thread about it, with plenty of input from C7 people.

There's an even longer thread with more C7 input here. (Glimpses of character creation, something about "future aspects", table of contents...)
Swords & Wizardry & Manga ... oh my.

Will it have as much random-table goodness (or more??) than Starblazer?

Actually, the Swords and Sorcery setting is Anglerre, from the comics.  The new setting being developed is a high fantasy one, more Tolkein-esque.

Cool. It's been awhile since I read anything about it.

Hi guys,

Apologies for not replying sooner on this thread - thanks to everyone for jumping in with links and info.  Jason's bang on - we're snowed under this week with getting the manuscript ready for layout, which all being well will be starting next week, at last!

I'm Sarah Newton, I've been working with Chris Birch and the guys at Cubicle-7 since last March (or so) on Mindjammer, and now Legends of Anglerre.  I'm point person on stitching the whole Anglerre manuscript together, writing and re-writing chunks, and so on.  We've had a cracking team working on writing and playtesting, including Tom Miskey and Mike Olson (both of whom I think post here), and plenty more.

Anglerre's been a big project, and to answer your question Pundit there's a *lot* of random table goodness!  Unfortunately not all of it will make it into the core book, but we have a Companion planned next which will contain all the additional bits, plus some scenarios and extra goodies - after the Monster That Is Starblazer we've had to be a bit less exuberant with our page count, so with judicious editing we're hoping to hit about 350 pages in letter-size hardback format, about 225,000 words.  We have another 50,000 words of material waiting in the wings, plus scenarios, so the Companion should be pretty chunky too.

Regarding settings, Anglerre like Starblazer is definitely a toolkit - it's intended as "the Fate fantasy roleplaying game", so you can play pretty much the whole range of FRP with it, including D&D style, Tolkien, Stormbringer, etc - all that kind of thing.  We've put some epic and mythic stuff in too if you've an Exalted or Glorantha interest.  The in-book settings are Anglerre (a Swords and Sorcery setting from the Starblazer comics), which is very much like Moorcock's Young Kingdoms with a bit of Hawkmoon thrown in, and the Hither Kingdoms, which is a D&D-Tolkien-Narnia high fantasy setting which we're hoping everyone will feel immediately at home in. It has a few tweaks and special rules (sorcerous corruption turning elves into orcs, that kind of thing) plus lots of dragons, gods, and monsters, but basically our intention was you should be able to run a D&D-module type game in it more or less with your eyes shut!

There's tons of other stuff, but the links everyone posted are pretty good summaries of where we are right now.  As soon as the manuscript's out of my hands, I'll be putting a website together with previews and more info, but if anyone has any questions I'll be happy to answer them!

Cheers,

Sarah

ChrisBirch

...and sorry for being criminally missing in action :-)

We have definitely been a lot harder on the editing of sections for Anglerre - whilst Sarah has done a fabulous job of editing the text right down we've still had to cut some sections to make the required page count so the Anglerre companion will feature some really sexy stuff that wasn't quite ready or we felt just wasn't necessary for the core book to give people the all singing all dancing fantasy Fate.

I'm really excited about the book - there's so much potential and it's got me wanting to write up some awesome fantasy campaigns for it.

The Future Aspects mentioned deal with Aspects that will come to be and tie in with personal plot points for characters which help inspire the GM and player alike. They're so much fun to develop between players.

Sarah's spent a lot of time working on a really cool mass combat system that scales nicely (as always) and uses exactly the same system of course. It means you can do really fun sieges and battles during a session without thinking 'oh let's cut the siege that will be really boring to roleplay'
