This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Recon is the nam game, from Palladium though not using their house system.  Second edition, Recon Deluxe, is quite well regarded.

Quote from: SosthenesThere are games about modern conflicts? There's not even a single serious game about WWII that I could name...

GURPS did an absolutely excellent SERIES of gamebooks about WWII.

Quote from: Mr. AnalyticalYeah, it's funny that the "group attack" rule, which was originally used to stop racist and homophobic posting now gets used to get rid of people who disagree with such oppressed minorities as "people who might want to buy a Solomon Kane RPG" and "People who read Drizzt novels".

Too bad for you, Mr.Analytical.  They probably pegged you for being a Proxy.

Quote from: blakkieI like the idea of a south american setting. And yes Dr Rotwang!, I often am saddened that FASA decided to make central american one big monolithic evil corp/government. Without some sizable deviation from canon it is sort of a no-fly zone.  Or maybe that's all in my head?  Any thoughts Jong?

When dealing with Aztlan, it is important to understand that the original sourcebook came out when the Immortal Elf/Horrors craze was peaking. The book made it pretty clear that Aztlan is one of the scariest and most oppressive countries in Shadowrun. Shit, even your prayers are registered by the government!

That being said, a campaign set in Aztlan can be very entertaining, if wildly different from your average Seattle game.

FanPro has made efforts to give runners more opportunities, while keeping the hostile environment. You have Aztechnology's internal politics, Amazonia, Vatican agents, Amerindian guerrillas, Caribbean pirates, Texan militias, Californian smugglers, the Nicaragua Canal, Colombian nationalists, etc. There are lots of possibilities.

Unfortunately, most of the new stuff was written for Shadows of Latin America, which remains in publishing limbo since 2005. The plan was/is to release it as a free PDF through Holostreets, but that website is taking forever to launch.

Caracas is definately a viable SA location. A real wildwest/pirate port/Bartertown feel to it in those 4 or 5 pages in the new Runner Havens living in an uneasy no-man's land bubble of tension between Amazonia and Atzlan.

I sooo want Shadows of Latin America to come out. :(  I was looking forward to it even more than Shadowns of Asia, which is to say a LOT.

When I wrote Caracas for SoLA, my model was 17th century Port Royal. Peter and Lars did a really good job in RH.

You tell me. It hurts on so many levels that you wouldn't believe it. :(

Oops, sorry for going OT. :o

Contaminated to hell and back, overcrowded, extreme povert living side by side with some of the richest guys on Earth, corruption and criminal gangs running amok...

Yeah, Mexico City can be a kick-ass cyberpunk setting.

Yah, I hijacked your hijack. :)  I second Jong's take, Mexico City would rocketh as such.

But what about a gangland style game in current day Mexico?  Or say Columbia so you've got the FARC to tie back into the actual first post of this thread. ;)

If you can, watch a movie called Our Lady of the Assassins, about life as a hitman in MedellĂn.

Oh, that's perfectly gameable too, no doubt.  My tastes, you see, hew closer to neon lights, holograms, flashy fancars and sweet, sweet new wave music, so...El Cyberpunko del Futuro it is.

I would totally play a game set in 70's/80's era Latin America. I'm kind of in love with Latin America, but have never had a chance to get down there. America should do more bridge-building with the folks down there. We could collectively offer a lot to each other and the world.

Didn't Alan Dean Foster write some sort of Anglo/Hispanic fusion cyberpunk novel?

Sure! And you can come up here for a visit into "the belly of the beast!" America? Once you get to know us, you'll really like us.

Also, since I live in Mississippi, I'd love for you to check out what the Deep South is all about. It's nothing like what pop culture depictions would lead you to believe.
