Anyone run this?
Just bought the new Dark Horse printing of the core rulebook today. Feels like a highly tuned 4E D&D Mecha conversion in a good way.
I was always of the opinion that 4E was a terrible engine for D&D, but was great for other genres. I would have loved if the Marvel TTRPG powered by 4E would have made it through licensing hell.
I hear a lot of good reviews of this mecha game.
However, I cannot get behind it. I own Lancer, and I found the setting was a let down.
That is just me, though. If you like the setting, then get the game.
I have the core rulebook but I found it a mess to navigate (maybe the newer printings improve on it, I don't know). I also found the pretty heavyhanded political tones of the setting very off-putting. Stripping that out felt like more work than it would take to just run another game (YMMV).
Mostly what I hear is rules good, setting heavy handed and political. There was a Kickstarter for a Lancer RPG Videogame that was centered around playing Queer Indigenous Lancers versus Colonialist.
I'd love for there to be more good Mecha games out there, however, I'm not interested in supporting someone who would probably love it if my family and I died.
There's a difference between say, Pathfinder's Golarion being a little bit Progressive and "You play Queer Indigenous people fighting the evil straight white colonialists!"
So for now I'll stick with Mekton Zeta and Savage Worlds.
Not my thing. I'm totally cool with Mekton (either II or Zeta) because I have yet to find a Mecha genre game that beats it. The only politics I want in a game are those I or my players put there.
I'll second all of Jeff's points on this. :-)
