This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

"Kobold Quarterly is the scrappy little magazine of Open Design, a tiny journal that covers the world's premiere roleplaying game. Each issue is written and illustrated by the industry's best.

Because Kobold Quarterly is not associated with any particular company, we can run what gamers want, instead of what the marketing department wants. We talk shop, interview RPG luminaries, do character optimization, and offer you the finest worldbuilding techniques to tested tactical crunch."

You can buy a subscription or get single issues through Paizo.com

Has anyone had a look at the first issue?  What did you think?

I enjoyed issue #1 very much and just received #2 in the mail today (preferring print to pdf when dealing with larger works like magazines).  The decision to sign up for KQ was a no-brainer, especially with the death of Dragon/Dungeon.  Wolfgang has the knowledge and the connections to make this scrappy little mag work and, as a fan of early 80s heyday Dragon, I can see KQ gaining the same quality.  Issue #2, for example, enlists Jeff Grubb, Skip Williams, and Ed Greenwood as contributors.  My faith in the mag not only made me a contributor but also an advertiser; with Tricky Owlbear contributing an ad for issue #2.

Looks nice.  Does "covers the world's premiere roleplaying game" mean D&D.  Does it mean all iterations or just 3.5?  Is it a coy way of avoiding lawsuits?

Not that there\'s anything wrong with jerking off, but don\'t fool yourself into thinking you\'re getting laid." —Aos

Probably all of the above.

Mostly 3.5 so far. Seems like it'll follow 4 if it isn't a disaster. Wolfgang does seem open to discussion on the subject.

I liked the 1st issue and have not yet read the 2nd.

let me know if KQ starts covering other editions as well.  i'll subscribe in a heartbeat, then.  would be interesting to see a mag do that.

I've got issue #2 and it rocks!  :)  But hey - with guys like Wolfgang, Zeb Cook, and Jeff Grub - what else d'ya expect?

Recent comments from Gary Gygax on the Kobold in D&D.  It seems there was a breakdown in communication with the artist for the Kobold entry in the Monster Manual.

Quote from: EGGKobolds were not meant to look like canines, nor have some reptillian features. they were patterened after the Teutonic kobolds, forest goblins.

Quote from: EGGThose are great illustrations of goblinesque little fairy folk. Had I had that picture on hand when kobolds were put into the MM, that's is what I'd have passed along to DCSIII.

Neat. :)
