This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Just how sexist is the RPG hobby?

Quote from: Xanador;469429Why the hell would I want to look at art of fat and ugly people? I see fat and ugly people everyday, their called "the public". (myself included as I ain't no model)

That all depends on what you define as 'ugly'.

Recently many of us have watched a show featuring a dwarf or midget character who had many nude scenes in a brothel or two.  Years ago you might think women (and men also) might find those scenes strange or unwatchable.  Yet those scenes had great dialogue, moved the plot along and the character is thought of as charismatic to many.

Heck a few of the women gamers that stop by the store now say they find Tyrian Lanister as played by Peter Dinklage to be an attractive or sexy character.

I'm saying from my angle they would be fun to draw... I wasn't concerned if anyone else would be looking to pay me for them. If nothing else I can take them to game night and show the guys how I imagine their characters look... So yeah. RPGs seem to appeal to dudes more than they do to chicks. Unless it gets tail-chasingly bad with RPG books turning in to barely concealed porn, I can't really seem to get too bothered about this "problem".

 Except, AC/DC isn't metal, they're hard rock.

There's no reason to be passive aggressive or bait people into freaking out when we can just call eachother dumbfucks in plain english and freaking out won't get a user banned.
"In a way, the Lands of Dream are far more brutal than the worlds of most mainstream games. All of the games set there have a bittersweetness that I find much harder to take than the ridiculous adolescent posturing of so-called \'grittily realistic\' games. So maybe one reason I like them as a setting is because they are far more like the real world: colourful, crazy, full of strange creatures and people, eternal and yet changing, deeply beautiful and sometimes profoundly bitter."

Quote from: danbuter;469379In world of the politically correct, all women should wear burkhas, or they would make other women feel they are being used by a sexist because they are flaunting their body.

But don;t you secretly think Burkhas are quite sexy :)

I mean I prefer a chick in a burkha than a fat ugly chick in a bikini any day. I mean there is always a chance the girl in the burha is dressed like a victoria secrets model underneath ;)

Quote from: GRIM;469378A lot? I don't agree. Some? Perhaps. There's nothing inherently wrong with some nice cheesecake/pinup or even porn though.

Also lets not forget that these days there are a lot of bisexuals and lesbians that enjoy RPGs. More than some of them like that kind of artwork.
They still make comments about the outfits should possibly be more practical for an adventuring character....

Sure, if you're playing Harn or RuneQuest maybe. Not so much the high fantasy stuff.

So impractical and thus sexist

Versus practical and therefore not sexist ?

And one for the ladies (or more likely the gay gamers that Ed seems to have missed from his all inclusive post )

(and yes Spartacus is one of the gayest shows on telly :) )

That's because the vast majority of posters here actually play RPGs and also know some women.

I'm not in the scene, but it looks like there are plenty of metalheads who are concerned about racism - in particular the minority of neo-nazis/skinheads that show up in the metal scene.  For example, there is the  Metalheads Against Racism website or this article on "Racism in Metal".

Now, I'd agree that simply because more men than women are into RPGs, this doesn't inherently mean that RPGs are sexist and/or that there is a problem.  On the other hand, I don't agree that anything less than tail-chasingly bad barely-concealed porn is definitely non-sexist and not a problem.

For me, I've got two issues:

1) Even ignoring the chance of finding girlfriends through games, I like having a mix of men and women in my groups.  It contributes to an atmosphere I like.  However, I find that it's regularly not easy to get such.  So even if there weren't an inherent problem in sexism, I'm interested in finding and promoting games that appeal more to women.

2) I do think there often are genuine problems of sexism in the RPG hobby.  It can blend in since there's plenty of sexism in source material like superhero comics, pulps, etc.  However, that doesn't mean it isn't there.  For me, it's annoying and I'd like less of it.  Besides the illustrations, I sometimes have issues with how women show up in examples of play and in background archetypes.  Of course, if I'm in a group, we can ignore these - but it affects how people coming into the hobby perceive RPGs.
