This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Just how sexist is the RPG hobby?

Go figure :P

To be frank I always found you the worst offender, but that might be just me ^^

For me, it's the Novus guy, whatever his name is.

Every shopping thread (and there are a lot of those), and even a few here and there that just might kinda qualify, he posts the exact same "buy my new game" post. And it's not exactly a shining example of brevity, at that.

Some people mistake the one for the other and finding someone attractive is now called 'objectification'. Didn't you get the memo?

Ah I don't notice him anymore. My eyes have developed muscle memory that skips over the post without skipping a beat.

LARPing like running around in a field with foam swords? Or LARPing like Vampire LARPing? I'd imagine that a fair portion of the former are marginally more in shape than other gamers.

Quote from: danbuter;469241The only experience I've had with women regarding gaming is them making their boyfriend or husband stop gaming because it's too nerdy or they hate gamer guys. Seen it happen three times, so far. Wait, the last time it was because the wife decided that she needed sex maybe five minutes before we all showed up to game every single week for a month in a row (when we all just bailed out).
Heh, I guess I shouldn't complain about my male players sending a text message on their cell phones a couple of times during a game. I did propose limiting cell phone activity to the smoking or toilet breaks recently.

Anyway, I don't think there's anything particularly sexist about the games themselves, except for people without any sense of humour. I mean, I hope no one takes the sexist genre tropes of sword & sorcery seriously and just has fun...

In my own experience it's the potential female gamers that are the ones being sexist and conformist, either considering RPGs one of those childish men's hobbies you just have to tolerate but certainly not take part in and/or by claiming to lack the imagination for it. I don't consider this experience representative of the whole hobby, though.

This is my answer. The chain mail bikini has been a staple for decades. To answer the question, I don't find that terribly sexist, but nor would I think it's terribly inviting to women.

I think a lot of this tends to be a case of the aforementioned mistaking sexy for sexist. Being 'sexy' is something people often want in escapism.

Sexy women are used to sell products to men and... sexy women are used to sell products to women. That's real world stuff though, we're talking about the fantastical and escapist.

There is a contingent that believes any company that uses sexy women in it's advertising is sexist. No matter that those women make tons of money for just posing in front of a camera. I tack it up to jealousy and class-envy.

Fair enough, that was poorly phrased. Misogyny is always offensive. As long as the genuine misogyny is rooted out, I see no big problem with the fact that RPGs largely cater to male interests. Lots of hobbies have large gender imbalances, and this is not necessarily a bad thing.

There is a difference between sexy and sexist, sure. But a lot of RPG art is blatantly sexist, above and beyond being sexy.

Simlasa

I don't think it's generally sexist at all... but I have seen some embarrassing things and it only takes one maladroid to scare someone away and get the stories going.
Otherwise it's just a boys club that seems to concentrate a lot on the size of various numbers and the psuedo-machismo of vanquishing imaginary foes... which some women are into, sometimes.

A lot? I don't agree. Some? Perhaps. There's nothing inherently wrong with some nice cheesecake/pinup or even porn though.
