This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: RPGPunditSomeone's sig around here says "Its not a real RPG if the GM can't do a total party kill without the players consent".

While I understand and sympathize with the sentiment, I must offer Toon as a counterexample.  No one dies in Toon as written, but it otherwise plays like a regular rpg.

I never could stand playing Toon for longer than three hours in a row. Are there campaigns for Toon?

EDIT: jeff, thereĀ“s always the Total Party Boggle!

... you don't play the role of a character. (fails the regular definition of role playing)

... it has no randomizer beyond the whims of the GM. (fails the regular  definition of game)

... the randomizer isn't dice. (fails the picture of a regular RPG)

... there is no chance of failure, or failure is meaningless.

... it isn't focused on something.

For all of those (except perhaps number one) it can still be an RPG, it just won't fit my take on the definition of "regular" as it pertains to RPGs.

I get the spirit of this comment, but how far does the sentiment extend?

I understand someone finding something like the Dying Earth RPG, with its mechanics that push the characters toward ignoble failure and encourage a general farce, as not being a "regular" RPG.  However, would that sentiment also extend to something like Call of Cthulhu that try to evoke horror, dread  and fear with its sanity rules?  Or something like Toon or Teenagers from Outer Space that don't allow characters to actually (or permenantly, at least) die, which does seem to create a particular mood.

So what exactly is the point of this thread, anyway?
