Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

It's my Birthday! Suggest some great resources for Old School Essentials

It's the same exact rules as the Classic Fantasy Tome. Except there are some more options, such as:

Magic-Users can learn more spells per level and can swap spells, but can still only cast up to their level limits. Optional rules for learning spells based on Intelligence score.

Addition of the Druid, Bard, and Illusionist with new spells for a different flavor of cleric and M-U.

More playable races as well as race-classes such as Drow, Duergar, Gnomes, Half-Orcs and Svirfneblin.

Magic Items from AD&D 1e.

Many, many more monsters.

I actually bought the Advanced tomes first, then I went back and bought the Classic fantasy tome, one as a gift to a friend and so I ordered one for myself too. The price may be a little daunting ($40 for each book) but they are durable hardbacks.  I am very happy with them.

I will look into them and I might get the DM screen as well so I am really ready to go.

Thanks for the information.

I don't know if the DM screen includes info from the Advanced Fantasy rules, or if it is only for the Basic Fantasy rules. The version I have is for Basic Fantasy.

Since the rules in advanced are the same with just more options I may get it anyway.

Besides, it looks cool.

Depends; how much do you like OSE Advanced?

I have never looked at it.  How much different is it to the basic fantasy?  Do you use both or can advanced be used all by it self?

I am new to everything OSR so I am trying to learn as much as I can but I only know a little at this point.
Sorry, forgot I posted in this thread.
Any way, I highly recommend "Fantastic Heroes and Witchery". It's an semi-stand-alone OSR game, but you is a great add-on for any OSR that emulates OD&D\1E/B-X type game.

There's a new release called "Gods of the Forbidden North" that's getting lots of positive buzz: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product_reviews.php?products_id=451792

Apparently it's volume 1 of 3, and is a campaign setting with lots of short adventures and adventure hooks.  The second volume will detail the underworld of the setting, and volume 3 will be a megadungeon.  Seems to have a very 80s vibe with Sci-Fi elements weaved into it.  I haven't bought it yet myself, but after watching & reading reviews, I'm strongly considering it.

The ones that crawl in are lean and thin
The ones that crawl out are fat and stout

Your brains come tumbling down your snout

Happy Birthday!

The Basic Fantasy RPG is based off B/X as well, so there's a bunch of stuff here you can use without much or any conversion:
