This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

It just doesn't feel the same without real dice

So, I'm sitting here, slightly bored, trying to think of something fun to do.

I was thinking about rolling up a Gamma World character, just for fun, when it occured to me that I don't have my dice with me, and don't know what happened to them.

And while I have a computer in front of me, and any one of a billion possible ways of generating random numbers with it, I don't really want to.

It just doesn't feel the same without the real deal.

I wanna roll some damn dice.

This is why you should keep an adventure set on you at all times.  That's what belt pouches are for, and they only cost 1 gp.

I only own 3d6 and 2d10 myself.  I just mooch off the other people at the table, who are more often than not degenerate dice addicts.

The Yann Waters

I realized recently that out of all the dice in my desk drawer only three are in fact old-fashioned six-siders. Apparently more d6s might be needed if I ever run that Finnish Praedor RPG, since that's what it uses for dice pools.

I still have all my dice (including d30 and d100), and will be getting new dice soon! :)

beeber

i used to keep a small pair of six-siders with me almost all the time in my undergrad years.  the campaign i was running used the CT/MT rules so i could run something at the drop of a hat.

was good for spontaneous drinking games too

Geez, man, you can pick up more dice on the floor at a typical game convention. Go to a few and try looking around under the tables. :D

I have decided that I will next give online gaming a try when I can actually roll online dice.  Tycho of Penny Arcade seems to think that era is almost upon us, thanks to the Wii.

I found a very nice standalone dice tray program here:  http://home.earthlink.net/~evildm/dd3e/tools/index.html

It's got some pretty cool features really, that go beyond the usual stock die roller.

Why no one thought of a persistent state tray like that for so long baffles me, because it's really a quite nice way of doing things.

Plus it has sound effects.  And you can even download image sets of real dice.  Which helps a little.

There's always the honor system, where you still roll your favorite dice and then type in the result. I prefer it to dicebots which sometimes seem to get "stuck", winding up less random than they should be.

Both the honor system and that dice tray app are great suggestions, but one lacks the integrity of dice on the table and the other removes the tactile sensation of actually rolling.  Without both of those, the experience lacks oomph for me.

Get cheap webcams and point them at the dice rolls? :keke:
