This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

What are the most basic types of spells?

If you could only include a dozen or so spells in your game, what are the most useful, most basic spells you would want to have?

Excellent! This is the sort of breakdown I was looking for, although maybe a little less general.  It's good though, I can extrapolate what I need from this.

That's the "magic modes" from the Talislanta RPG. There's a short sample at the web site which lists a sample magical school (Wizardry) which goes into details how these modes are interpreted and has some sample spells. Just to get the general idea...

Yes, it is a neat list. It could be more simplified or abstracted, but these are basically the actions a player wants to do.

Call it a crazy hunch, but somehow I get the feeling that you've been playing Talislanta...

EDIT: Darn. Too slow.
