This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: The Butcher;351244Eclipse Phase takes a cue from Lovecraft (presumably via Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space novels), working off of the concept of the Great Filter -- which can be briefly described as the idea that the reason we don't get to see or hear from any sentient life beyond Earth, is that the stars are teeming with life, but it doesn't get to progress beyond their world of origin. Maybe they're bound to self-destruct, or too lazy to build spacecraft. Or maybe Something Really Bad is out there, nipping them on their buds.

That last bit isn't really part of the Great Filter theory in its original form; but it should be. What if its none of the basic steps that are the problem, and its easy to get from primordial ooze to starship-building civilizations, but the problem is that there's some big thing out there eating any civilization that gets to that stage?

In the computer game Mass Effect, which I'm currently playing, it's suggested that multiple civilisations have formed galaxy-spanning cultures and empires, then each time something's wiped them out.

So yeah, that works too.
