This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Is theRPGsite in danger too?

Seems ENWorld is in serious trouble:

AFAIK theRPGsite is operated on the same servers, are we in danger too?

At least on the money front, we did our part. I hope this will not affect us in any way.

We are not on the same servers.  We're on NZorak/Bullitt's server.

Oh, I see.
That means we can start the gloat and slander?

No, it means that now would be a good time to pitch in to keep one of the web's largest gaming communities and a valuable online resource afloat.  You know, kind of like what we just did here....?

Agreed. The folks at EN World are pretty cool in my book. I'll be sending some money tonight.
"Meh."

RPGPundit

I'm not welcome at ENworld, but that said, I think it is a valuable resource-site. Those server costs are shockingly high, though, I know ENWorld is obviously a much bigger site than ours, but it still strikes me as something being kind of off there, if they are costing 150% of our yearly cost PER MONTH.

So I think they need to find some kind of solution (paring down some of their features, perhaps?). I do hope they don't disappear, though, it'd be an unfortunate end to a longstanding and valuable site.

RPGPundit

PS: Just to note, as far as I know we are NOT in any kind of trouble. Our server has nothing to do with theirs.  As far as I know.

First, doesn't this happen every now and then at EnWorld? I seem to remember such a crisis going on some time in the not too distant past.

Second, their pricing is not that unreasonable if you consider a dedicated server with a T1 or possible a T3 line. Bandwidth is what really kicks you in the but. This site cannot come close to that level. EnWorld has ridiculous requirements to support their massive traffic, if I recall correctly from last time.

They'll make it.  I'm sure of it.

There are cheaper server options out there, they just need to shop around and find a solution that is less expensive.

It seems like they have the traffic to justify a dedicated server, they just are paying way  too much

Looks like you are right:

A site that popular, especially when it is combined with a few other popular sites, is not going to want for money.

Yep.  It appears they have already raised $2000 so they seem to be doing better.

And you get what you pay for. If you need a T3 then you will be paying more. I sincerely doubt you could run EnWorld on a $4.95 a month plan.

I mean cheaper dedicated servers.  There is a lot of competition out there and you can find some very good services for much lower prices and not get crap service for the low price.

Zachary The First

Well, I'm glad to see they'll apparently make it.  I don't visit there often, but I've read some great AP threads there that have given me plenty of ideas.
