This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

One usually assumes that nowadays, unless WOTC are preparing a new D&D edition, RPGs are slapped together by freelancers in one-person basement sweatshops.

But here is Matthew Sprange on Mongoose Traveller:

QuoteTraveller is not being written and produced by part-timers. For the next six months, several Mongoose employees (probably eight, in the final count) will be working on this project, full-time. All day, every day.

Holy cow.

I'm assuming that, Mongoose having been around for a while and having published the odd RPG book in the process, their Traveller business plan is sound.

That said, how TF is that possible? I'd love it to BE possible, for Traveller's and the hobby's sake. But, new printing technology or not, just how many copies do you need to sell to make it all viable?

To me, that means they are gambling BIG on this - bigger than some people expected. Also means they may pay more attention to quality contreol than they usually do.

Wanna know what I mean ?

Heq, I've already [posted on this ..HERE, on the SJG forums, and on the Big Purple & Pink. (yes Its 'relevant"!! Goddamnit!!)

At least the SJG license for the GURPS version gets that exemption.

Mongoose almost exclusively use full time staff to write their stuff. I applied once and failed to get the gig.

So, when they acquire a new project, the whole bunch converges on it? Well... it's definitely a way to get things done thoroughly and on time.

I think that Mr.Sprange is being a bit creative with that statement. Sure, they've got 8 or more full-time house writers and i expect that most of them will have some input, but i would put aside the image of an office full of 8 writers getting down and creating this stuff that his statement above sort of implies.

TheShadow

That statement certainly illumines Mongoose's strengths and weaknesses. They do get things done on time, and the synergy between multiple writers can result in good ideas. But not one of those eight is a long-term Traveller guy, or even known for SF. They are just doing a job. And none of them are good at editing or art/layout direction, if history is any guide. Creation by committee with an eye solely on the lowest common denominator...that's how I felt about MRQ, anyway, and I can only pray Traveller turns out better.
You can shake your fists at the sky. You can do a rain dance. You can ignore the clouds completely. But none of them move the clouds.

"What...?"

"THE STICK!  Get The Stick a smoothie."

It would work, Doc, but for optimum discipline you'd have to look slightly differently from your avatar and get a thick East End accent.
