Title: Is Hasbro Partnering D&D With A Gambling App Company?
Post by: jeff37923 on January 02, 2025, 01:04:19 PM
I just saw this while getting ready for work, so I haven't parsed through the hyperbolic amateur's presentation to much yet, but it looks like Hasbro is offering the DnD IP to a gambling app manufacturer. What does this hold for the future of the brand?

D&D slot machines is the first thing that came to mind when I saw this post. Such an easy way to cash in on a brand that requires literally nothing.

EDIT: Haha, in the video comments someone points out that there already are D&D slot machines. So I guess this is specifically for hyper-addictive microtransaction videogames?

Looks like.

They might just be putting D&D branding on their terrible gambling apps. But I'm sure Hasbro will be paying attention to how this could be applied to their toy and game selling methods.

From a video I watched, the person speculated that the lack of announcements about new books is because WOTC is more interested in licensing out the D and D IP then books for the game.

Makes sense since licensing IP is easy money and can be lucrative.

TSR beat them to it. The sheer amount of stuff that TSR under the Blumes and Williams licensed out is impressive. This is what wotc found out when they bought TSR.

wotc then of course forgets that whole hell they went through and likely still are, and want to one up the Blumes in mismanaging the IP,

I don't like either Blume and later era TSR or WotC as soulless corporations. However, WotC has done financially well for itself over the past three decades, while the Blumes managed to bankrupt TSR in about six years.

That's not an endorsement of their ethics or creative spirit, just acknowledgement of reality. I dislike gambling, but I'm sure that D&D-branded gambling will bring in revenue for the corporation. Eleven years ago, there was a launch of D&D-branded slot machines:

I suspect they've done reasonably well in revenue over the last decade, like many other licensing deals.

TSR was an RPG company, despite all of its licensing.  WotC has stayed afloat based on Magic and being a subsidiary of Hasbro.  Of course, the original version of 5e did well... because it was much less a WotC game and more a TSR-inspired mechanics.  Thanks, RPGPundit!

I think we'll have to see what the tie-in actually is.  Will it actually be a somewhat good D&D themed RPG with gambling awfulness?  Or will it be adding D&D sprinkles to gambling features that already exist?  The former is definitely bad news, but the latter isn't particularly interesting.

TSR did a ton of licensing. Licensing isn't the issue.

The issue is we have companies that have perfected the art of preying on people who are weak to gambling structures. You can see it in the decline of Diablo as a game with a loot slot machine, to modern Diablo with all kinds of microtransactions to improve those loot drops. Diablo Immortal is especially heinous.

I do not trust WOTC to resist the temptation to optimize prying their rent money out of people with gambling addictions.

Brian Blume was from all accounts a nice guy. But he let his brother Kevin do as he pleased and it is Kevin Blume that everyone hated. Kask had some rather unkind things to say of Kevin and his mistreatment of the staff. Kevin Blume was one of the reasons Trampier quit.

As for doing "financially well" wotc has multiple times been on its last legs. During 4e they fucked up so badly that they could not even budget art for some projects and the whole RPG line was one step from getting the axe. woc was also notorious for botshing nearly every board game project Hasbro tried to give them. With a few notable exceptions. But even these successes they try to kill.

If not for 5e wotc would be practically dead now.

At this point they should just partner up with OnlyFans too, and just go for all the thirst.

I wonder if this is more a loot box sort of paradigm, rather than a slot machine one.

Well, now I'm intrigued.

Please remember that Konami has already made about six Dungeons & Dragons gambling/slot machine games before this was reported. This is likely nothing new, rather them getting caught because they were repeatedly trying something bad.

It's a slot machine company. They make both online slots and physical slots. Of the at least 6 slot machines over the years I played one back in 2009 or so. It was...fine? I've seen better D&D slots on YouTube that I have not encountered at Vegas. But they might still be there. Vegas is big.

They can also have people gamble on who 'wins' (or survives) an episode of 'Faster, Purpleworm! KILL! KILL!' on eOne, everything is in place for that. And, on the rarest of occasions, characters have survived.
