This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Is "Fun" a useful term?

Quote from: TonyLBBasically:  I think RPGs should be fun.  I play them in order to have fun.  I think that the actual fact of fun is very important.  But I have my doubts about whether the word "fun" does more good than harm.  What do you think?

Calling something "fun" is the beginning of the dialog -- not the end of it.

If someone at my gaming table wouldn't have "fun" if something happened, and they feel strongly enough to bring it up, it seems like something we should talk about.

Of course I get to have "fun" too -- I enjoy games that have a high degree of fidelity to the rules, characters and game world.

I'd rather my fellow players play in-character, rather than taking out-of-character actions because the momentary payoff of those actions would be "fun."

For me, having a few non-fun episodes is a small price to pay for fidelity and consistency; believeability. Versimlitude.

But in terms of starting a conversation?

If "Hey. I'm not having fun here" isn't worth saying, what *is*?

Cheers,
-E.

QuoteYour argument is false because if you're using the same rules-set to run things with, it must by definition be the same game. You are just filling it out differently. It doesn't matter if you play rat catchers, witch hunters or Skaven. It's still Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing. As long as you put the rules at the centre of the game (which I assume you do, since you agreed that following the rules is a valid reason to shut somebody down), the game does not change fundamentally, from action-laden dungeon crawl to character-heavy intrigue.

He didn't say it was a different game. He said it had a different point.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled quote war.

I have learned much today.  The masters have shown me that, to understand "fun", it is necessary to decide what other people think and believe (instead of asking) and then attack that.  It is the sound of one man arguing.  And thus did the OP ask his question, and then the masters answered the question without giving it heed.

I'm going to like this place.  It's all Zen and stuff.

I do kind of miss someone posting in red and banning someone for daring to argue with someone from the "in crowd", but I'll get used to it.

Well, well, well. A new poster feels the need for snark. Guess what, pal? You just earned a couple of days off to think about it.

God, it turns me on when you talk like that.  Just don't make disagreeing with me a habit, or I will write an emo thread blaming you for why I must leave theRPGsite...forever!

I'm glad I have no fucking idea what ya'all are talking about. I really am.

Fun

or FUN!!  As I've posted it sometimes...
(yes I know this is an older thread...)

When I GM my games I like to know if the players had fun or not. Hell - I'm looking to have fun too.

If while walking to their cars afterward I hear players say "Damn I'm really looking forward to next game ...want to see what happens next" , then I know they had fun that night.

If we linger talking afterwards and everyone seems like they don't really want to leave quite yet and have big fucking silly grins on our faces - then we had FUN! that night.

If, I as the GM, feel as exhausted afterwards as if I just had pretty good sex with someone I like - then we had fun that night.

If the husband of one of the players tell me in an AIM message that his wife was really turned on after the game  and implies a "thank you" - then I know we had a FUN! game that night.

All this Narrativist/simulationist/Gamist stuff can just jump out of the window. I know what the terms mean  - but I am not going to run games overly worried about theories.

Possibly because that forum did not exist the last time this thread was even vaguely alive.  You two are conspiring to necromance a thread months dead and buried.  Ain't'cha got nothin' better to do?

Who's conspiring??

I was checking out some of the stuff that was discussed from before I registered - just to see what was interesting.

Sometimes  an old thread can be interesting to those that never saw it before.
