This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

When I first heard about this I thought maybe I could get some use out of my old copy of Gods, Demi-Gods, and Heroes, but the mechanical crunch is pretty much a deal-breaker for me.

I'll just say that it is far less crunchy than Exalted.

Quote from: J ArcaneWell, I'd say that judging a work sight unseen just because of where and how it was published is more than a tad silly.

Maybe, but if human beings were entirely rational they wouldn't be human beings.  They'd be vulcans.

You can't tell me you don't make arbitrary decisions some might consider silly, just because?  ;)

This interests me. From the sounds of it the system seems closer to what I'd want from an Exalted 2nd edition than Exalted itself.

I'm sitting on the fence purchase-wise. If I did decide to take the plunge then it's likely I'd transplant the system into a quasi-historical fantasy setting, or keep the modernity and have the characters all hail from geographically proximate pantheons. I like the idea of Norse/Celtic/Greco-Roman Scions descending into the underworld of the London Underground tube network, kind of like Neverwhere meets The Dark is Rising novels with elements of Alan Moore's speculative fiction.

I'm just not seeing that from the demo pdf.  Could you lay out some of the simplifications?

The lack of Charm trees would undoubtedly make things quite a bit simpler.

The Boon trees (special powers) are just 3 linear powers that can be bought out of order and have simple effects, much less involved than Charms in all ways.

Multiple Actions: Capped at 2 attacks, that's the most you can do per tick.

Smaller dice pools.  No Charms to bump dice pools into the 15 or 20+ range.  Epic Attributes just give automatic successes.

While I can understand that hate over this game.  I for one haven't found anything worth wile out of WW since I ran bored of Mage - the original release.  Yet I've read through scion and for what I want out of a game it's fantastic.  I don't need 400 pages dedicated to a setting that I don't care about.  Gimmie the rules, some flavor text and let me go about my way.  That's what Scion does.  If I want a setting to drop it in American Gods or a slew of other novels does that enough for me.  If I want detailed world information I'll buy a map.

Scion gives us a WW product without all the angst and BS that I find plagues everything else they've put out including Exalted.  This for a nice change is a rules set that is fast playing and doesn't get into or pretend to touch on all the moral crap that all their other products do.  It's fantastic.

Quote from: C.W.RichesonPeople hate the game?

It seems a number of people elsewhere are bemoaning the lack of setting-heavy metaplot, which is actually a selling point for me. The bare bones approach has a lot to recommend it, and may make the game considerably more flexible than, say, Exalted, where the mechanics are pretty much fused to the world.

For those who own it-- how easy would it be for me to adapt the rules to a bronze aged setting?

Yeah, I'm one of those people.  I gave it up because I felt like criticism of the game was impossible given how excited the fans are.  I'm glad so many folk are excited about a new RPG though :)

There isn't really a setting, so it takes no effort.  Just replace the firearms skill with archery and I think you're golden.  You'll want to create stats for heavier armor, though you could just use the lamellar stats for everything.

Excellent. I'm inching closer to making a purchase, once funds become available. :)

Sounds like steps in the right direction.

For anyone that has the game - I took a quick look at the free download (it looks ok). But, is there anything in the rules not shown that would stop it from running side by side with standard Storyteller products (2nd Ed.)? Or is it closer to Exalted?

(The ticks and wheels thing makes me leery of, say, picking it up and using the Scions as modified Hunters.)
God in the Machine.

Here's my website. It's defunct, but there's gaming stuff on it. Much of it's missing. Sorry.

I've got a blog. Do you read other people's blogs? I dunno. You can say hi if you want, though, I don't mind company. It's not all gaming, though; you run the risk of running into my RL shit.

It's just not compatible with Hunter or other Storyteller products.  This is, flat out, the Exalted 2nd edition system with some tweaks to make it faster and less involved.  They're just worlds apart, you might as well design new content from the ground up.
