This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Iron Kingdoms next week

Ghost Whistler

The core book is out next week.

I'm tempted, but I seem to recall it being part of a considerable multi book format. I'm not sure I want to buy into another game that requires me to buy loads of different books in order to get a minimum level of info.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

Silverlion

I'm much the same place as you are. I'm tired of "ten books to play the game."

One core book should be all you need. I can understand if they want regional information that is detailed, but that's better for a optional book, give me the highlights and the rules for it so we can play NOW.

I couldn't find their plans on their website. But then I didn't spend much time looking. I remember Deadlands back in they day: all the space spent saying "we're going to keep some secrets from you for now!" could have been used for the content of the Wierd West sourceboook which was at least released simultaneously with the core book (both of which together are the same price as a game is now).

The Butcher

I like IK but I confess I haven't foillowed the news.

Where'd you read about the multi-book deal?

Also, does anyone know anything about the new system? Any previews?

IK is right up there with WoW as one of my favorite "new school" fantasy settings. Incidentally, I think it'd make a pretty good MMO.

They have three books lined up, but it's not really a case like Deadlands where there's 'hidden plot' or setting elements. The corebook focuses on the titular Iron Kingdoms, which are the main civilized and non-monolithicly awful polities in the setting, with the other two announced books covering the wilds and the various 'evil empires' respectively.

However, the corebook still has plenty of stuff to do a wilderlands focused character, and they released a free bestiary in .pdf for foes from all over the place. There are a couple specific things you can't do out of the core (or at least not easily) that are important to those parts of the setting (being a Warlock or a blackclad druid are probably the big ones), but I think what's there is pretty sensible.

MGuy

New Iron Kingdoms books? Did they change stuff or are they just relaunching the old ones?

LeSquide

Totally new books. They're using a house system, based off the core rules from the wargame (IE, 2d6+stuff vs Target number). Measurements are in inches, with conversions to feet.

Meh ive considered picking up a few of the miniatures but they're so bloody expensive that it puts me off, i can get decent sized rpg rulebooks or a ton of dvds for the price of the basic packs (of which i'd need at least 2 as only my brother would play and he's a cheap git).. I have zero interest in picking up 3 or 4 overpriced rulebooks for an rpg set in the same world thats more than likely just gonna be used to convert people over to the miniatures game.

LeSquide

The game is complete out of the corebook. At 60$ it is pretty pricey, however, so if you're not a fan of the setting already it probably isn't worth it. They have a discussion about playing the game without miniatures, but using 'em is definitely the core assumption.

The Butcher

As usual, I'll wait for the reviews to roll out.

I'm not a dyed-in-the-wool IK-head, but I did have a blast with the old d20 IK books.

every game is 'complete out of the corebook', whether they actually are is another matter entirely.

Blackhand

Just like other miniature game tie ins, you have a lot more information if you play Warmachine and have those books.

Or the old IK books.
