I have my theoretical reservations on some 5e stuff. But actual play matters. So I shall put up and learn from GM experience. More details posted in PbP Forum.
Campaign Style - Open Table
Character Generation - 4d6 drop lowest, or Standard Set
Location - Time, Place, and Scope
Summer at a Silver Mine Boomtown on the Rain Shadow of a Mountain Range.
Start
Premise: Come make your fortune.
Meet Area: Saloon. Bulletin Board.
Quests: Bounty - Claim Jumper, Bounty - Mayor Robbed, Investigate - Spooky Mine Shaft, Investigate - Unsettled Graveyard.
I want this to be faster paced so as to see the meat of the rules in action. So I apologize in advance for less faffing on my part than normal. I shall also try REALLY HARD not to ThaumaDigiFap.
Any setting/ruling questions, ideas, etc. please post here. Let's reserve PbP OOC topic for CharGen and Crunch posts. I want to get to IC Topic ASAP. Thanks.

But of course! More the merrier! :)
Any other questions, etc.?
This will be a play by post right? If so I am down if you don't mind having me. I haven't actually played in a good while.

I'm interested Opa...you want to roll my stats or shall I?
I'm interested.
CharGen info and crunch questions are in theRPGSite PbP Forum. There is only one non-RAW rule, a d% for races allowed. I already set up a Dice Room at Rolz website, which is also posted in the PbP topic.
Durn, I invite you to repost your character on the PbP topic, so as you can edit it in the future (gear, wealth, items, etc.). I shall post a preferred format example, for my aging eyes.
And course I would have you all. :)
IC topic is coming up. Whipping up the prime Saloon/City Hall/Courthouse, yes the hamlet is nascent and busy. Alternate saloons coming soon.
Any setting questions?
The overall feel of this is very... Western-y. How much should we be playing that up?
I like the Western feel as it is one of the few historical times where egalitarian cosmopolitanism was an accepted standard out of sheer logistic necessity. It still is medieval D&D, as there is no gunpowder. But feel free to run with Western ideas, avoiding the most egregious anachronisms (gun powder, steam punk, etc.).
Cultural names, I'd say Western Europe and Western Native Americans in a blender. Dwarves use variations on rock and mineral names. Halflings use florid names, but let's keep them down to First Middle Last at most. Elves mostly Native American & fae, but they are quite rare by demographics.
Do all the Elves live in Tahoe? ;)
Only the wood elves. The high elves live in San Mateo & Marin. Ha! I kill me.
:rotfl:
What's the name of your dice room?
He posted the link on the PbP forum thread
Library Lass, I need you and any others interested to get your PC turned in by tomorrow. Otherwise you all will be the first newcomers for the next batch of open table players. The table will remain open, so you can still play, there will be just a bookkeeping change:
Any new batch of players after tomorrow's cut off will get a new ver. 2.0 topic so as to keep things clean. Hopefully it will help us all process groups in smaller chunks. This would also likely carry over to IC parties, but you'll be free to associate and switch (but let's cross that road when we come to it).
The High Elves live up in Humbolt and Mendocino. ;)
When you say IC topic, do you just mean a separate thread?

You *sure* you don't want gunpowder? I mean Halfling Gunslingers...

I guess you could make a Halfling Wizard who uses these weird metal things whenever he Rays of Frost or FireBolts. I'd have to multiclass into Cleric of Brandobaris just to have Thaumaturgy so everywhere he showed up, people would hear "owee owee oh, wah wah wah".
I'm glad I was not the only one who went there with Thaumaturgy & the Western feel. You can even simulate the freeze frame screams to music, you just have to hold real still after casting.

D&D may not have, as Old Geezer puts it "Disappeared up it's own ass", but an attempted return to something completely minunderstood by the designers is starting to look like it resulted in unwitting self-parody.
Hey Opa, I'm gonna have to wait and join in later, I've got stuff this week.

Aww... :(
But thanks for letting me know. I look forward to you in the second player batch. Best of luck with your stuff!
Unfortunately, I have to bow out of this round as well.
I've suddenly got an RL hexcrawl to embark on and I will be far from the interwebs.
Back in a few weeks!
Aww... :( And I had your start, the sleaziest dive in town, already prepared. Mercifully it is still usable without your starting tidbit.
Well we still got your character. When you return we can have you post in the second batch as well. And "Hunk" will still be waiting for your next debt payment.
... aaaaaaaaand the cat came back, the very next day!
NEXT PARTY BATCH OPENING UP!
I have 6 slots available, 2 reserved for Durn & LibraryLass if they are ready this month.
It takes about a few days to get slots filled, create characters, check them twice, and set up a clean IC topic. So dream up some ideas!
The basics are in the PbP [Interest] 5e RAW topic. Don't post there yet, just read the starting pitch. Please talk here so we can build up a quorum. Then I will start another OOC topic just for you, to scratch up new characters, you lucky second batch!
for Endless Flight: Feel free to ask questions and chargen brainstorm.
Also, still 5 more slots open for this August's batch. The Open Table waits with open arms.
Hey Opa, is it okay to use stuff from the PHB now that that's out? 'cause I've got an idea for a warlock that's burning a hole in my pocket.
Sadly, no. Don't have the PHB myself, which leaves it an article of faith for the GM. And it goes against the table pact I made at the start. :(
However, there's oodles of variables within RAW. And if RAW gets updated now that PHB is out -- and I can check it out on time and approve -- there's that.
Come join! Wacky hijinks for everybody! We're overburdened with fighters, so make another fighter! :D
--------------
Kinda wondering where Endless Flight went. He was interested in being a Rogue...
I'm right here. I thought we were waiting for another batch of players.
Yes, but we can get started on your character. Go to the die roller:
rolz.org
then go to room:
Livonia's Lament
then type in (for 4d6 drop lowest). you may also use Standard Array:
repeat 6 4I6 (note! <-- that is 4, capital "I" as in Important, 6)
have fun brainstorming what you want here, and when it gets populous we'll open up another OOC topic or slip you into the current one.
What if I get bad rolls? :D
Then we have even more fun! :D
OK, I got 6, 15, 15, 15, 11 and 11.
Are those the final scores or can I adjust them?
(Ooh! Lucky! You got a line with a 7 and a 4! But alright... :()
You get to arrange the scores to taste, as per RAW. Your race and sub-race will adjust them further. And as mentioned before, you may use the Standard Array instead — also arranged to taste.
Psst, pro-tip: count how many odd numbered ability scores you have, and if you feel you have critical mass, I'd recommend Human race. :D
Psst.. a rogue would be nice.:)
I'll probably go with Human Rogue.
Alignment Lawful Neutral
Background Criminal (highway robber)
Trait I don’t pay attention to the risks in a situation. Never
tell me the odds.
Ideal I’m loyal to my friends, not to any ideals, and
everyone else can go to Hell.
Bond When I see something valuable, I can’t think about
anything but how to steal it.
Abilities Str 12, Dex 16, Con 12, Int 16, Wis 7, Cha 16
Hit Points 9, Armor Class 14
Proficiency Bonus +2
Proficiencies Light armor, Simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, shortswords, Thieve's Tools (+4), Dice set
Saving Throws Dex +5*, Str +1, Con +1, Int +5*, Wis -2, Cha +3
Skills Acrobatics +5, Athletics +3, Deception +5, Investigation +5 (+7), Sleight of Hand +5, Stealth +5
Class Features
Expertise Thieve's Tools, Investigation
Sneak Attack (1d6), Thieve's Cant
Equipment rapier, shortsword, burglar's pack, crowbar, leather armor, two daggers, thieve's tools, set of dark common clothes, 15 gp
Trinket An invitation to a party where a murder happened.
Gah! DEX before STR, it blinds! :(
Your background also gives you a crowbar. That means you got two!, because burglar's kit provides another. Double wieldin' improvised weapons... :)
I'll reformat later for consistency and then we can copy-paste for the IC topic when we come to it. Feel free to brainstorm reasons why you are at the boomtown. I'll answer any questions about locale, whether you want to be a drifter or embedded, etc.
Ok, we'll continue on. Congrats, you are alone so I can incorporate you into the current group! However, I want your character sheet integrated at the beginning of IC topic for easy reference.
So I'm going to resolve the last two players' scene — that of the Mystery of the Grim Man. After that, and they go to bed, all player characters will be at rest and we can restart the topic afresh. I will do IC Livonia's Lament pt. 2 topic: I'll post a few location core posts, leave space for all 6 of you to re/post your character sheets, and I'll finish that with starting locales and a situation recap.
Hopefully they will wrap up soon and then we can whisk you in smooth. :D
