"In AD&D domestic cats were better fighters than 1st level magic-users"

Also, I think that a gaggle of cats sounds more menacing.

I HAVE RUN THIS.  ;)

It was in HackMaster, and one of the players actually got dragged back to town, to jail, because after the PCs subdued her and tied her up, they took it upon themselves to slit her throat.  There were brand-new hirelings, who the PCs then left on watch, all by themselves, while the PCs drank whisky.  The hirelings were like, "Okay, I'mma fail a loyalty check and drag this drunken murderer back to town, who's with me?"  I then got to run my first extended jailbreak scenario since the Black Box "Zanzer's Dungeon" scenario.

A domestic cat is no different than other super low level monster vs a 1st level magic user: whomever wins initiative will probably win the fight.

Yeah, and this is not unique to 1e/2e AD&D either.  In 3.5 D&D a 1st level Cleric and cast Summon Monster I and bring forth an number of low-Hit Die creatures that can potentially kill a 1st level MU; or any other 1st level character for that matter.  (I'm partial to Celestial Badgers myself ;)).

The joke was made that therpgsite is served on a dial-up 56K modem because it only allows ten posts per page.

D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

Technically, it's not a big deal, but it's still very weird and often unintentionally hilarious. In AD&D, the domestic cat can potentially pulverize multiple 0-level characters in a single round, and this is because of the way Hit Points scale in the game. It's not just about the stat block for a domestic cat, because other small, innocuous-looking animals can inflict Hit Point damage.

In AD&D, many (if not most) "normal people" are zero level characters with only 1d6 Hit Points, so if you're interested in taking down some unruly peasants, then find a way to control a few cats. Heck, even a few squirrels will do. And now you know why people fear Druids.... ;)

So, that\'s something, I guess.

The stupidity isn't that a housecat has a better chance than it should to kill someone, it's the fact that someone thought it necessary to stat up a housecat at all.
For fuck\'s sake, these are games, people.

I am currently writing up a dungeon for this weekend with the AD&D Cat, Domestic as adversaries; I may call it "The Catacombs of Bast"

I'm thinking I need to stat up Cat, Domestic, Giant for giant lairs as well...
Yeah, but who gives a fuck? You? Jibba?

Well congrats. No one else gives a shit, so your arguments are a waste of breath.

Throwing a boot at a cat is a pretty normal thing. Practically a cliche. Does this make the cat attack you? Nope. Attacking a housecat makes it run from you, not fight. The cat's fine with its damage the way it is - because except in very strange, entirely abnormal circumstances, the cat simply doesn't attack the magic user. In situations where the cat is actually going to attack, it's a cat that has something very strange, abnormal, going on. It's Greebo, and he's going to stitch you right up.

Maybe someone wanted to show how wimpy magic-users were.
