This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

"In AD&D domestic cats were better fighters than 1st level magic-users"

Quote from: talysman;543656Do you think that it could have killed him? Because that's what 1 point of damage means. "Could kill some people." I'm OK with letting bunnies make someone seriously bloody/cause a lot of pain/give 'em a nasty scar. But I probably wouldn't let a bunny kill someone. Infection? Maybe. Bleed to death from unbandaged wounds? Maybe, if I decide to mess with bleeding rules.

I doubt my uncle would have been killed, because he was tough as nails. However, people do get killed in flukish ways by minor cuts and other seemingly trivial injuries, like the man who got killed by one of the birds at a cockfight (though the rooster had a razor attached to his leg).

All it takes is a nick to the throat, armpit or inner leg and you could bleed to death very quickly.
Jesus Fucking Christ, is this guy honestly that goddamned stupid? He can\'t understand the plot of a Star Wars film? We\'re not talking about "Rashomon" here, for fuck\'s sake. The plot is as linear as they come. If anything, the film tries too hard to fill in all the gaps. This guy must be a flaming retard.  --Mike Wong on Red Letter Moron\'s review of The Phantom Menace

And the special power of a cat swarm?  Allergies.

I suppose it is factually true if I squint my eyes hard enough.

Quote from: Elfdart;543636The fact that the two numbskulls who advanced these arguments -along with another doozy ("OH NOES! TEH MM2 IZ TEH OPSHUNUL!")- is, whether they want to admit it or not, an admission that in a one-on-one fight, a house cat is a serious danger to a 1st-level magic-user.
Certainly, a defense of the rules as written is very weak.

QuoteGygax also made dolphins Lawful Good, so maybe that's why.
I was not aware of this, but it makes D&D reach new levels of wonkyness :D Good fun wonkyness, but wonkyness indeed.

As D-503 / Balbinus / Max said last Sunday while we were going around Barcelona: "Hit Points are like Mythos stuff, is better to not think about them."
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

B.T.

Quote from: Black Vulmea;530561Y\'know, I\'ve learned something from this thread. Both B.T. and Koltar are idiots, but whereas B.T. possesses a malign intelligence, Koltar is just a drooling fuckwit.

So, that\'s something, I guess.

Quote from: Planet Algol;543551C) It's going to be hard for me not to make a side-dungeon that involves homicidal cats for this weekend. "Gardens of the Catmaster"?, "Dreams in the Cat House"?...

Subvert that dominant paradigm!

The PCs are sitting at their favorite tavern when a black cat appears on the table and says, "Yes. You will all do very nicely." The room starts to get hazy and then the PCs find themselves in an alley, polymorphed into cats (allow the PCs all of their stuff, but it is all part of their cat physiology - weapons become teeth and claws, armor becomes their fur coat, etc.). The black cat is there and introduces himself as Mr Mistofelees, informing the PCs that he needs them to find and rescue Old Deuteronomy from Macavity or else he will not be able to channel the magic needed to return them to their world and they will remain Jellicle Cats forever.
"Meh."

Spike

I would just like to point out that Benoist's big, detailed, 'mathematic' proof that the statement is false, even giving assumptions of extra power to the wizard, still gives the cat a 20% chance of victory.

1 in 5 cat on wizard attacks results in wizardly death. Benoist proved that conclusively while slanting the evidence in the wizard's favor.

So, while picking up the random 'domesticated' housecat in preparation of, I dunno, turning it into a loyal (and therefore safe) familiar, 1 in 5 apprentice wizards risk a vicious case of cat scratch fever and a cold grave.

And I thought I was in a dangerous line of work. Now we know why wizards were a rare breed that never managed to change the world in meaningful ways.

Also: If I ever need a lawyer, for any reason at all, I am NOT calling Benoist to argue my case. :)
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

Oh shit. Now we have to discuss the disease rules in the DMG.

Any retroclones out there with rules for toxoplasmosis?
Don\'t forget rule no. 2, noobs. Seriously, just don\'t post there. Those guys are nuts.

Speak your mind here without fear! They\'ll just lock the thread anyway.

I don't know what the big deal is.

A domestic cat is no different than other super low level monster vs a 1st level magic user: whomever wins initiative will probably win the fight.
