This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

If you had to narrow down your RPG bookshelf, which books would make the cut?

D&D 5E - 3 core books, plus Xanathars (it's thin), and the Kobold Press Tome of Beasts and Creature Codex (both thick but useful).
D&D Rules Cyclopedia
MRQ II Runequest - or replaced with any other version of Runequest or Mythras, really, but I've currently got that one and RQ III.
Dragon Quest 3E.
Toon - one or two books.
Hero System 4E - Big Blue Book, plus a couple of Fantasy Hero supplements
Burning Wheel -- all "gold" books except Adventurer's Guide, plus Torchbearer and Mouse Guard.

In reality, I've got one book case for all my RPGs.  Until it fills, nothing goes. So I'm not dropping assorted items like Reign or Riddle of Steel since they don't take up much space, but I'm probably not going to play them, either.  Ptolus is really thick, but it's paid for.  If I had to replace it all from scratch for some reason, it would be the first five rows on the list above.

When the Lyonesse game is released next year, I expect it will replace the Runequest entry above.

It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.

That's laughable...

haha right. My office no longer has walls. My bookshelves are now load-bearing and holding up half my house.

AD&D 1E (PHB, DMG, MM)
Traveller (1977)
Gamma World (1978)
RuneQuest 2 (1980)
RIFTS (1990)

hah! it's so close to being true it's almost not funny. I have pruned my collection - but not in many years.

I'm keeping all my D&D 1e/2e stuff. All my Savage World's stuff. All my FFG Star Wars stuff. Talisl...

you know what? I'm keeping everything. Fuck this game.

I agree with this. But, if I really had no other choice (digital for instance)

Here is why this forum tends to be so stupid. Many people here think Joe Biden is "The Left", when he is actually Far Right and every US republican is just an idiot.

I think I could run everything as a homebrew hack, so I can get away with just using RISIS.

However if I have to hastily grab rpgs, then these digest-sized rulebooks are in my hands:

- BRP OpenQuest Basic
- Fate Core
- OSR The Hero's Journey
- Traveler (MG 1E pocket edition)

On a good day, I can pretty much run anything with one of these little books and my imagination :)

If I have more space in this hypothetical backpack, then I'ld also throw in:

- BRP Mythras
- BRP RuneQuest Glorantha
- BRP Call of Cthulhu (7E or 3E GW version)
- BRP Corebook ('BGB')
- Conan (Modiphus 2D20)
- The One Ring
- Traveler (MG 1E)
- Two-Fisted Tales

That'll do me fine

However, if there is more space in this hypothetical bolt-hole, I would consider adding some of these:

- Dungeon Crawl Classics
- D&D 5E (only if I can also pack AiME)
- Interface Zero 2.0 (Fate edition)
- Jaws Of The Six Serpents
- Capes, Cowls, & Villains Fowl
- Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells
- Barbarians of Lemuria
- WEG Star Wars
- BRP Magic World (or BRP Stormbringer)
- Pendragon 5.2
- HARP Fantasy
- WoD Vampire The Masquerade 2E and 5E
- WoD Mage The Ascension 2E
- WoD Dark Ages Fae
- CoD Corebook

I could probably get rid of about half my RPGs, I have a lot of weird old games that I never played.

I'd keep my old D&D boxed set, all my D6 stuff, Mutants & Masterminds, Twilight: 2000, and my Babylon 5 books.

B5? That's something you don't hear too often. I finally sold my B5 books last year. What's in your collection?

B5 was one of the best sci fi series ever made,  but tragically I think it will be mostly forgotten,  if it hasn't been already.  The original cast was such an indispensable element of the show. With so many of them gone now,  a remake just wouldn't be the same.

Robyo

Definitely will hold onto my monster books, from any edition. They are so inspirational. Conversion is fun.

Probably keep the more interesting setting books.

Player's guides from editions I never get to play would go soonest.

Trond

Basic Roleplaying - this works pretty well for almost anything
Artesia - very good and choking full of material. I like the way the spirit world is very important
Houses of the Blooded - yup that's a "story game" if I understand the term correctly, and it is very different, but good
The One Ring - very nice package overall, and I'm a bit of a Tolkien fan
