This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

If Wishes Were Horses: New Game Line

A financially sound company, able to meet demand and publish to a regular schedule decides to ask the public what they want for a new game line. There will be a single core rulebook and maybe 3 supplements a year.

What sort of a game would you ask them to produce and why? Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, Pulp or something missing in the current climate?

What is your new game shopping list? Prefered mechanics? Setting? Tone? Or is there a licence you would like them to pick up?

Wish away. :)

I want a good modern fantasy game.  Magic, spirits, cars that run on dreams, the works.

Good, descriptive setting - at least on a level of Shadowrun 2nd.  Fiddly  mechanics that have at least one new and innovative thing going on.

I'd love this game.

A sprawling realistic post apoc setting ....our Blue Planet after some bad stuff happens. I don't really want resource managment but I'd like to see how humanity relates to the changed enviroment. Issues such as economics, laws, customs etc should be taken into account.

Also, I'd prefer it if the setting was devoid of any religious symbolism or if there was any, it was something that had come about after the world went to shit.

The game should be an adventure game but with strong thematic elements :D - which should be left up to indvidual groups - and there should be plenty to do, besides just survivin' ...exactly what that is, I leave up to the dream team of designers ;)

I like the format of the first ed WFRP, so I'd like to see an epic campaign with info on various locations of this setting. The campaign should not   end in some world altering event, but should leave the whole setting open for more adventures.

Rules, I would like something not too crunchy.

David R

Yeah, that's be pretty cool. Have to beware being twee though. What is one man's cool fantasy twist on a modern theme is another man's lame twist.

I know that there's Xcrawl and a few board/computer games that cater to it, but i wonder whether there's room for more of a sports/fantasy game out there? There's a God awful film called Salute of the Jugger with Rutger Hauer that's about a travelling group of 'sportsmen' in a post-apocolyptic world. Something like that might have some utility. Sort of a Gama World/Bloodbowl mix.

Slightly off topic: A Knight's Tale does a good job of being a medieval/sports movie focused on jousting with humorous modern sports overlay.  The Hedge Knight also does a great job of calling attention to the importance of medieval sports, once again jousting and armed combat among knights.

If someone released a sports/fantasy game that focused on those things plus wizard duels, duels of wits, etc. I'd be all about it.

A more modern or post apocalytpic version might be tough.  X-Crawl succeeds so well because it's just a fun excuse to kill things and scream for the crowd.  Maybe if there was an alien invasion scenario and humans played blood games for their patrons?  You could set up a campaign all Gladiator style with the human team working themselves into the alien leader's good graces in an effort to kill him/her/it.

Makes me think of a (bad) episode of Sliders where the group slid into a wargame reality show...

As soon as i read that i thought about Predator. A free-form gladatorial arena in the wreckage of Earth's cities. I suppose that The Running Man  also comes to mind (already a bit Xcrawly). Fight for food, goodies and 'pampered' status among the aliens...all the while gathering intelligence on their strengths and weaknesss, their ships and devices.

I hadn't even thought about The Running Man but that's a great point!  The quirky characters and funky dialog made the movie especially fun, I can see a similar RPG being a good time.

For me a game like this would need to at least poke a little fun at itself.  While you could have a game that is a dark and serious affair, something a little more light hearted focused on killing everything chainsaw massacre style is what tends to come to mind.  I wouldn't want a light system necessarily (building characters to survive and fight another day is part of the fun) but I would want a system where character gen is relatively fast given the beer and pretzels "pick up game" aspect of a game like this.  Probably not going to have a lot of folk commit to long term campaigns of death arena matches.

It's no Blue Planet, but have you ever looked at Darwin's World?  For me it's still one of the best post apoc settings/games out there.

Another film source that has sprung to mind is Escape From New York. If you could meld the setting of that (inter-gang fighter, building a reputation, finding resources, surviving) with the whole gladiatorial arena, aliens, Running Man vibe, you could have a setting to adventure in outside of the arena style game. That could lenghten attention beyond 'pick up and play' for longer campaigns.

But what do you do when you escape. Or when you try?

Then it can shift to trying to get rid of the alien menace or even building a viable 'free' community. That'd bring a whole new set of problems and opportunities. As to when, who knows?

signoftheserpent

For me it's too limiting. It wouldn't be a game I'd enjoy.

More like this please.

I have not, but here's a good review on RPG.net: http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11983.phtml

The game is like a grown up Gamma World meeting Fallout with scattered other post-apoc material.  It's definitely science fiction - no magic, but some super science from before and during the last war still floating around.

Like I said, it's no Blue Planet - it has mutants and other classic post-apoc trappings - but I think it's one of the best options out there for post-apoc roleplay.  Be aware: it is d20 Modern.

Now if you combine it with d20 Apocalypse you're really cooking.
