Title: Ideas for an Ice/Cold-Based Superhero
Post by: ghost rat on August 13, 2007, 04:36:11 PM
I may be swapping out my current M&M2 char in a couple of weeks. I thought that since I've been seeing/making so many fire-based characters recently, an ice-based one might be a nice change of pace. I want something cooler than the bog-standard mutant or liquid-nitrogen-accident ice guy, but past the concept of "icy," I'm bone dry on inspiration.

My feeble musings so far:
A yeti.
A practitioner of "ice-style" kung fu a la Storm Riders.
A frozen-and-later-thawed caveman.
An incarnation of a grim Germanic winter god much like Ulric from WFRP.
Some kind of mind flayer squid creature from the ocean near the North Pole.

I like the caveman idea. Maybe even a norse/viking/snow-elf type theme.

Maybe Aurora Borealis, or something. I tend to go for the 'costumed adventurer' type who may only have a few gadgets as powers, but have an icy or themed name like "Tundra" or something.

Is ice a theme or does it recall ice-powers (like entangling rings of ice, or like.. environmental control) or is it a blast ("polar ray") only or what?

For some reason most of the ice characters I can think of in comics are all villains.

Well, perhaps some additional grist for the mill...my M&M campaign would have eventually featured Winterkill, personification of the Canadian winter and major villain in my setting.  More of a ravening elemental force rather than an ice/cold hero (and much more powerful than an individual PL 10 character...Winterkill was PL 16 or 18, IIRC), but, y'know.

Powers included raising a blizzard/ice storm that blocked vision and ranged attacks and drastically limited flight, exuding a bone-chilling cold for several hundred yards (permanent), surrounded by ice (bane of speedsters everywhere), plus the usual ice blasts...

...preventing cars from starting, sticking tongues to flagpoles...

Snowbird from the original Alpha Flight wasn't an "ice-based" character as such but was "north"-based - could turn into various animals of the Canadian north, IIRC, plus flight and superior physical abilities.

The Silver Age Sentinels setting included a powerful Russian character named "General Winter" who was a personification of winter, but more solidly based on Russia (i.e. he's the winter that protected Russia from Napoleon and Hitler) rather than an amoral quasi-elemental thing like Winterkill.

Blizning - a streetwise brother with impeccible taste in clothing and a love of bling and ice. So chock full of pun potential that it sells itself.

I've been playing too much City of Heroes the last 10 days or so...

Now that's something I hadn't thought of...definitely something to mull over, maybe someone with a Boreal Cloak and weird-ass ice pistols or something.

I haven't got any specifics, but I was thinking of a general array of cold-based powers, yeah.

An animated Ice sculpture, possessed by a ghost done wrong.

A child's snowman, animated by some stray "Belief Ray", from an Imagination themed villain, but this snow man is fighting for good because of the child's belief in him.

An Antarctic explorer, frozen in the ice, now awakened with strange powers from the lower continent (Perhaps: Captain Antarctica)

A person born during the passing of Haley's comet, with superspeed, and ice powers. (Perhaps: Kid Comet!/The Comet)

A primitive (re: caveman) who has mastered the chill after thousands upon thousands of years under the ice--with his pet albino mammoth! (Stonecold and Avalanche)

I like the cavema  idea- and I was about to suggest he ride a mammoth, but Silverlion beat me to it. He could have a bitchen spear with a flint point. He could even be a normal modern guy who finds the spear (winterfang) and gets his powers from it, you know like thor. I'm an archaeology grad student concetrating in the middle stone age; my friends and I joke about finding stuff like this all the time.

Oh  yah, a magical weapon is a great choice. Or an animal themed guy, like maybe "The Walrus" or "Polar Fox" or something.

All you need is a belt imbued with all the powers of the rock band "Foreigner". (http://youtube.com/watch?v=simzw9CiXjw)

A russian superhero called Father Frost would be great.
His alter ego is a slightly pudgy widower with 4 children...

Or the butch gay guy who got in a freak drug accident: Polar Bear

Okay, this rules! Now I'm psyched. The mammoth adds a dimension of badassness I had not considered.:D

Also unless he is meant to be purely comedic, play him SMART, this is guy is from a people who turned rocks and wood into advanced weapons (axes and spears), used fire, created the wheel and TAMED MAMMOTHS. He may be out of time, but he is not stupid.  No he's got a sophisticated language of his own, it may sound rough but that doesn't make it less complex than English. He should pick up English quickly. None of this self referential crap (again unless comedic.)

Cunning, strong, skilled hunter with ice powers and a pet?

Think Conan with a stone tipped spear.

Perhaps Oog from Aqua Teen Hunger Force could be his rolemodel.
