D&D 3 being dead means I can do whatever I want with it. I can slap in the SW: Saga skill system if I like that, go back to 1e spell descriptions if I don't like the way they've been nerfed, limit prestige classes to only ones that fit my world and cut down on the endless minimaxing of multiclass chioces, introduce house rules that make sense to me and fit with the system, and all that other great stuff.
It means it's really D&D now! A game I can make my own!
D&D 3 was always about 85% of the game I wanted D&D to be. There were just a few things that were off style-wise, a few things that were too minimaxy, and a few things that were too cumbersome (chiefly, the skill system).
But I felt I had to hew the party line, originally as a learning curve (the system is more intricate and self-connected than earlier versions of D&D), then later because I wanted to be able to keep up with new developments and maybe to be able to publish my stuff.
Now none of that matters, because it's just a game I play. The cutting edge folk will head off to 4e; 3e's now whatever I want it to be.
So I can run 3e again without worrying whether it's 3.0 or 3.5 or which splatbooks blah blah blah. Just the PHB and my house rules document and lots and lots of minis. Fuck yeah!
/pokes Calithena
I seem to recall someone saying they were going to play whatever crap WotC put out?
Seriously, though, I'm happy for your "liberation" :)
I'm expensive! :D

Well, I remain somewhat confused as to why you couldn't have done this all along, but if you're happy, hey man, good for you!
Technomancer, I did say that, and the reason was the network externalities. I don't think 4e is going to have the same network externalities, and even if it did, I don't think I'm going to like the new magic rules at all levels or the way fighters work at very high level (though I will say, 4e sounds like the best version of D&D yet to be a mid-level fighter in). And also, I guess I just don't care about NEs as much any more, because I've realized that I'm mostly just going to be gaming with my old friends for the forseeable future - I just can't maintain my family and career while running a weekly game group for new people, etc. So I'll be playing with people who will give me a grain of salt anyway, and I don't have to have a system that's ready for anonymous encounters in public.
Akrasia, I wanted to be hip! now! cutting edge! Part of the Current Big Thing! I couldn't stand just doing things my own way - I had to do them the Right Way!
Now that the system's dead, there is no Right Way, and I don't think I'll be getting back on the Right Way bandwagon any time soon. Because I don't need the network externalities, I don't care about publishing my stuff, and because the kind of D&D I originally loved was totally opposed to the whole Right Way model in any case.
So back to fantasy first and the homebrew triumphing over the rules as written. What a tremendous load off my back.

I believe I've found the gaping hole in your game plan. :)
But what will happen once 4E hits the shelves? Watch this space...
What will happen, Pierce, is that you'll come give a paper out here and then come over to my house after the obligatory post-talk wrangling, and we'll break out the minis and bourbon and dice!
I'm up for it. After the fifth shot, I wouldn't notice the edition.
That may be the way to go for all the dissenters, actually. Prospect of 4E freaking you out? -> Get hammered.

I can positively confirm that.
The module is an insult to your intellect?
Lower it in a fun way!
It´s like when you are at a family reunion: Food and alcohol makes the burden of doing unpleasant stuff so much more bearable...

!i!
Fuck off, Ian.
(I mean that in a nice way.)

I'm cheap, but of high quality. You are, however, going to have to learn to be patient.

Indeed.
I don't understand network externalities, what should I do with my copies of these?

P.S. I have got to scan a copy of my first character one day :D

Junk that crap, grab some Judges Guild stuff and play White Box DnD the way the Good Lord intended! Tegel Manor here I come!

I've been doing whatever I want with it for some time now. Whatsyerproblem?
:haw:
Anyway... I sort of feel the same way, except I fully plan to use supplements. I'm not sure if you don't use supplements why you'd have to wait around to get to this state.
I'm as free to kibitz as I always was, but with no new products coming down the pipe, I feel a bit more "above it all". I have a full palette of products to choose from to forge my game, I know nothing I do is going to be superceded, and I know that, most likely, all the new shiny players I have to beat back with a shovel when they just gotta play the latest munchkin thing from Renton will probably be moving on to 4e. Have fun with them, 4e adopters.

I still have mine too -- complete with character drawing. :keke:
