Title: I've Chosen a Title for my Next RPG Project!
Post by: RPGPundit on March 01, 2017, 07:52:59 PM
Announcing: The Winner of the Title of My New OSR Book!

So a few days back, I had made a poll, with various choices, for what was to be the title of my Medieval Authentic OSR fantasy RPG.   This is the current project I'm working on, wherein the rules are going to be OSR, but set up (and combined with an implicit setting of "authentic medieval" in the style of Dark Albion) so as to best reflect gritty, tough and emulative roleplay in a truly medieval society.

You know, where things like social class matters a ton, instead of not at all.
Where most of the conflict is human conflict, and anything inhuman is dark and horrible.
Where faith actually matters, and there's only one god (unless you're some kind of heathen or heretic).
Where the economy is as much about favors, gifts and barter as gold pieces.
Where if a sword-thrust doesn't take you, infection might; and if infection doesn't, plague might.
Where the magic system is eccentric, non-vancian, and based on real magic as practiced in the middle ages.

So, while the contest was close, and another couple of contenders missed out by a couple of votes, in the end, I'm going with what was my first choice as well as my readership:

Lion & Dragon:  Medieval-Authentic OSR Roleplaying

Now I just have to finish writing the damn thing, and Dominique Crouzet has to edit & lay it out. So, absolutely no timetable for when it actually comes out yet.

It sounds really interesting to me.

The magic system really draws my attention. I would like to know a lot more about it.

Give me a way to do France the way DA handled England and I'm sold.

Cool. Looking forward to seeing the magic system as well. Will you be including NPC stats and any kind of bestiary?

For sales, you may want to do a 5e version to sell on the DMsGuild site and an OSR version.

Heck, make it your first Kickstarter!

Are you using real Europe as the setting? If so, what year?

Looking forward to your playtest reports!

If you centered around England and France, you could call it "Leopard and Lily."  Although I'm definitely intrigued.

Right on, baby; sign me up.

I'm just finishing work on a long-term project that doesn't really compete with this because of system differences (and other things, I suspect), but is in the same spirit. It's a game focused on settings that are, or closely resemble, europe in the late middle ages and renaissance, with the rules system being a kit bash of concepts from En Garde!, The Fantasy Trip, and certain campaign elements from OD&D, with the design concept that every major 'module' in the game (travel, fighting, politicking, etc.) is playable in its own right as a solid mini-game. I'll forgive you for thinking it sounds like a mess (though it isn't!). The name is "Rota Fortuna"

Ah, that would have been perfect!

Regardless, glad to hear you've chosen a title, Pundit. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

I'm already sold just from the description in the OP.

Are there any more details?

I suppose my first question is what makes it different than Dark Albion, because it already sounds like Dark Albion does this.

Just going with Pundit's description of his game. Any actual issue CK? He chose the title and time period so what is your complaint again exactly? Especially since my earlier post was flat erased? It's his site so I'm okay if he's not down about real world attitudes about magic and religion and what they actually think about each other. Yes Johanna loves Mage the Awakening but knows RPG Games aren't real life. Magic isn't real but religion is. But magic among serious practitioners can be an actual religion also.

I think it's offbase but that's my opinion.

All I asked was "Where was the poll?" because that Poll is not on this site.  At some point, you really must actually read the words posted and not just listen to what the voices in your head are telling you people are saying.  It makes you seem a little more like a sane person and less like a crackhead playing forum pinata. :D

You're new, welcome to Marleyland, where half the posts are non-sequiturs from Bizarro World.

He didn't crosspost on his own gaming forum?  That was kind of silly.

This project sounds great!

Are you planning to make the rules open content?

This sounds like a potentially great book I would buy & use, and I think the title and graphic are excellent!

Think again we're talking about a setting in a semi-historical realistic Middle Ages Europe that believes in ONE god. I figure this means real world religions are in play. For serious practitioners of magic it de facto becomes their religion. And it's known that many worldwide accepted major religions have secret variants that practice that religion's accepted forms of magic but never are publicly admitted to.  ONE god or not given his religion does the same. I'm just interested in Pundit's take on what Middle Age types practiced as what was considered magic.

Well, Dark Albion is a setting book. This is a system book. It doesn't have its own setting material, but makes references to Dark Albion.

It's an expansion and revision of what started out as the "Appendix P" rules from Dark Albion.

My blog tends to have more dedicated fans.  This forum tends to have a bunch of naysayers, non-fans, and a lot of people who don't actually want me to do well.

That sucks. Krueger has a point. You should be able to share stuff like that here. I was fortunate enough so see it on G+ which is how I found this forum in the first place. I know you have detractors, and I certainly don't see eye to eye with you politically, but I would like to think that many of the people who join are not just here to troll The Pundit. Whenever you post something OSR related if I think I have a valid comment I will try and give you a straight answer. The thing to consider here, Pundit, is that you do have followers who are here and nowhere else. Like me, they may not follow your blog unless there is a link to a new post. This is not an insult to your blog so much as the fact that blogs are antiquated and aren't as great a platform as they were 10 years ago.

My recommendation here is to make an announcement post on the forum and then lock it. Include a link to your blog post and then... um... remain vigilant. Yes there are dicks out there who read about you but couldn't be bothered to look up what you actually say before deciding to make you a target. When I first heard about you, I had no idea who you were. Mostly because I first saw you in the Cubicle 7 playtest of DWAITAS. I never even saw your name again until the kerfuffle about you and Zak S consulting on 5e. I tried to see what the fuss was about but couldn't find anything that meshed up with the accusations. Sure you say provocative stuff but I've never seen anything to suggest to me that you were a bad person in some way. But there are dicks out there that will take third hand information as gospel and attack anything you do. I am sorry you have to deal with stuff like that. If you don't want to give them an inroad to do that, then don't do it.

You'll probably still have to remain vigilant on your blog, but I think it's worth it to crosspost here.

Yeah, I could have done that. But frankly, I didn't really need that big a sample size.
