This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Dr Rotwang!

...and I really, really enjoyed it.

It might be that the GM loves the game, is very experienced and skilled; it might be that I got to play instead of run for a damned change; it might be that C&C gave me that cleaned-up old school feel that I crave.

I pronounce it good.

It's the best.

What class did you play?

I've always felt that a good GM can run a great game, even if the system sucks.

Not saying the C&C system sucks... just saying.

On a tangent, the Talent trees in Saga are very similar to the "Kits" I proposed for the 4 basic classes durring the playtesting stages of C&C.  The Trolllords didn't like the idea though. :(

DO you happen to have a writeup of that?  I'd be VERY interested in reading it.

I really thought my group and I were going to enjoy C&C.  Well, we did not.  Intsead of retyping my thoughts, I'll just direct you to my brief blog entry on our trial game: http://dmbretb.blogspot.com/2007/04/new-game-fizzles.html

You may want to try the Basic Fantasy RPG. It drops much of what C&C does and includes class abilities (including %-based thief skills) but the abilities seem to be better balanced against the core resolution mechanic (which allows characters to mimic the abilities of other classes with a slightly lower chance of success). The core rules are available for free at the site linked to above, while Lulu sells softcover (perfect-bound) copies of the rules for $7.95 and a hardcover copy of the rules for $21.95.

Overall, the Basic Fantasy RPG seems to pursue many of the same goals as C&C, simply with more forethought (I suspect that the designer has a better grasp of die proababilities). I've started a creator-blessed forum over at my site for third-party (e.g., fan) discussion and development but due to my new PC crashing, it's a bit dead at this point in time (I lost my Isle of Dread and Keep on the Borderlands conversions in the PC crash, which were to be the first contributions to said forum).

Once I get my PC up and running (or replaced) look for more Basic Fantasy RPG activity/discussion there.

Just a fighter.  With an 8 Wisdom, I figured I'd play him as a swaggering young bravo with more enthusiasm and guts than actual experience or self-control.  Set Str, Dex and Con as Primes and rolled with it.

I only did up the Fighter Class as a sample.  I actually posted it on RPGnet after the book actually came out (NDA and all, you know).  I've since thrown out the notes long ago...you may be able to find that old thread on RPGnet if your searchfoo is waaaaaay better than mine.

Glad to hear you had a good time with C&C, Dr Rotwang.

I've found it to be a blast to play and run for old school style games.

Obviously the game didn't work for you, but I'm puzzled why you would find it strange that an assassin can listen better than a cleric.  An assassin is a master of stealth and subterfuge.  Why shouldn't he/she be more trained at listening than some priest?

No offense, dude, but your argument didn't do much to explain your experience and opinion.

If it's not too much trouble, would you elaborate further?  No hurry, no pressure, just curious.
