This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I need a good game.

While this seems likely to me as well, let me nevertheless point out Pelgrane's Dying Earth RPG which does (fairly narrow) genre emulation well and doesn't have both stats and skills (only a small set of pools).

Over the Edge is also definitely something to look at.

For a certain subset of 'true' it is.  That subset being 'person who never read anything other than THAC0 charts and the spell listings'.

Quote from: Spinachcat;254807D&D has always been a squad based wargame.

From day one, the concept has been a small group of diverse specialists sneaking through dangerous territory and killing the opposition.    Every edition of the game has included specific rules for movement, weapon ranges, healing rates and other issues related to battle.   All sorts of genre trappings have been laid over that initial format, but that is the core of the gameplay as presented by the original authors and their company.
For which the Random Harlot Table was quite useful.

Oh, wait!  Cyberpunk 2020 has specific rules for movement, weapon ranges, healing rates and other issues related to battle.  Obviously, a squad based wargame.

Hey, Vampire: the Masquerade has specific rules for movement, weapon ranges, healing rates and other issues related to battle.  Clearly another squad based wargame.

Hmmm...  No, on second thought, the more correct answer is that Spinachcat appears to have no fucking clue what comprises a squad based wargame, and even less regarding (A)D&D specifically.

What about that Maid RPG...? I think that it has all the rules for emulating it's semi-pornographic genre and doesn't go far beyond that ruleswise.

BTW: I wonder, how long will it take for Sett to show up in this thread and start whining at Pundy to move it to offtopic, because it obviously break die Landmarken..
You ARE the enemy. You are not from "our ranks". You never were. You and the filth that are like you have never had any sincere interest in doing right by this hobby. You\'re here to aggrandize your own undeserved egos, and you don\'t give a fuck if you destroy gaming to do it.

'Role-Playing' 'Game'

Game in which you Role-Play.

Game about Role-Playing.

Two different extractions. Some people prefer the first; some people prefer the second, some people play both.

And, yes, some people write long, annoying justifications for personal dislike that I didn't bother reading.

Cause really, that's a huge noise-to-signal ratio.

Quote from: Sadinotna;254764If anyone at all could tell me what is possibly lost by cutting out stats and just adding extra skill points I would be grateful, because I can't think of a single thing. Hell, as far as combat goes, why not just compress it down to a "Murdering people" skill and a "not get murdered" skill. It's not like the weeaboo is going to use anything other than a katana or the goth will switch from the scythe, so why not standardize? Just tack on weapon mods and you keep all the tactics with half the pointless-number crunching. (Once again, there can be meaningful fiddly bits. Nobilis comes to mind.)
Well, Nobilis does cram every conceivable action under four extremely broad attributes, without additional skills or complicated crunch: any potential fine-tuning beyond that is accomplished through optional Gifts and Handicaps. However, what the game doesn't really include is an actual mechanic for handling social interaction between the PCs and their peers, apart from the incentives or penalties for living up to your character's convictions or failing to do so, and the need to look after all that he cares about since emotional attachments can so easily be turned into traps and weapons. No miracle can take away the free will of a supernatural character such as the Nobles: you can't instantly charm another member of your Familia into doing whatever you want, or perform a Change of Mind to convince the judges of the Locust Court that you are innocent of all crimes. In the case of the PCs, the players must ultimately always decide how their characters will act, even when they are somehow being coerced or misled. In the case of the NPCs who benefit from the same immunity to direct miracles, the GM is entitled to the same freedom. No system can make those decisions for someone else. Brainwashing and mind control are explicitly not among the available options.

Role-playing needs no rules.  That's why most games don't have them, and even fewer--including those that do--actually need them.

Come on man, cut the crap and just say it.  We all know you're dying to.

"Rollplay vs. roleplay".  It always deeply amuses me to hear people still spouting off that sort of tired crap.

Dude, don't assume. I'm reading the Pathfinder Beta and liking the classes right now.

Or, to be perfectly clear to all those who think I fit into some sort of pre-defined demographic:

Some people tell stories about their characters and assume that makes them superior.

Some people play games and role-play in them and assume that makes them superior.

Some people play games about role-playing (In which category I'd stick most forge games) and assume that makes them superior.

I laugh at all of them. Cause man, that's just crazy talk. I take a game on its own merits, not some category someone else is trying to shove on me.

This, of course, makes me superior. :D

In the meantime, talk to my twelve D&D 3e books, my three 4e books, my 3 D20 Modern books, my Hero System Fifth Edition, Revised .pdfs, .pdf magazines and Hero Designer v2 and v3 and my collection of off-the-web free stuff.

I'd have more, but I'm poor.

Hey, that rhymes.
