This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I may have said somebody of the community comes across as fake. Am I wrong?

Quote from: ForgottenF on December 16, 2022, 10:46:53 PMUnfortunately, the state of the internet economy gives anyone with with a cynical mindset probable cause to be suspicious of any pretty girl making a living in the "gaming influencer" world. There is a definite financial incentive for attractive women to attach themselves to popular nerd subcultures, and it can be a route to (relatively) easy fame and fortune.

Yeah, the ultimate question of "fake" on this level has always been, "Would you still be doing this if you weren't making money off it somehow?"

Which I've always felt is at least a little unfair to demand; there does come a point in your life where one's time is valuable enough that you have to make some fairly harsh decisions about how you invest it, and you may only be able to continue with a beloved pastime at all if you can find a way to monetize it somehow. But at the same time, I can see how someone who loves the hobby for its own sake, regardless of what they make off it, might find it annoying to interact with those who have different priorities.

I don't care about this Sunny D person, but it's a sad fact that dudes will act like simps over chicks.
The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

I used to watch her videos.  I think it's good to look to different gaming sources to see if there's something new I should try or something I've missed.  I don't doubt that she's genuine, she's just someone I decided I don't need to follow any longer.

Arrogant as hell with comments like prior generations just didn't get how to play D&D while teaching people how to play "the right way".

That annoys me coming out of people who promote playstyles I like, much less from people embracing a playstyle I don't. I don't watch her for that reason, but I have no reason to think she doesn't play and enjoy D&D.

OSR does it, people here do it, a-lot. This is nothing new.

Annoying as all get out. But nothing new.

And yeah that quip bugged me too and one or two others shes fired off that just make me pause and go "really?"

That's why you see me doing very little to interact with the BrOSR despite overlapping a lot more with them playstyle wise that Ginny.

There is also a bit of forgiveness that comes with time. I'll put up with that from someone who has been playing and publishing RPG materials for a couple of decades than someone who has been doing it less than five.

To keep it to YouTube, Professor DungeonMaster annoys me at times, but the guy has been doing it for nearly forty years and put his material out there for nearly thirty. Even when he is arrogant, there is reason to believe his signal-to-noise ratio is such that I can learn something. Ginny D and some other "I started playing during the 5e era YouTubes don't engender that belief. She's not even the worst.

Te is a special arrogance to saying, "this thing existed for 45 years before I showed up during the current fad and has been a fad twice before, but only me and my contemporaries have truly figured it out."

Not saying that can't happen, but when your "discoveries" are things I can find being stated in the 70s by people with a much better claim to having discovered them, you just look like an idiot at best.

reminds me of a youtube vid i saw a few hours ago entitled something like "what is dragonlance and should you be excited"...

"...and should you be excited."

^^^^dafuq is this?

lo now, cultist, in order to be part of this religion you must "be excited" when told to by the authorities of the sect, or to elstwise be and think and feel as commanded in order to be part of this herd. So now being a ttrpg gamer is a fashion choice or lifestyle aesthetic, is it?

"Be excited" oh man there is this great thing i know nothing about but i'm told i should be excited here lemme feign drooling frothing slack jawed excitement, how do you do my fellow gamer persons...lol.

There is no doubt a high degree of fakery everywhere touching almost all things, always has been as near as i can tell, a gulf between what the paper says is supposed to be versus that which resides in physical reality.

Do you ever wonder at how many of these people get wotc money or products for plugging or shilling the latest 5e product? I sometimes suspect none of it is organic at all. This is a pet peeve of mine, this seeming groupthink, sports team mentality, its loaded with the most offensive assumptions such as assuming there is anything at all ever that actual gamers could or would agree on enough to get any sort of social norm or blanket rule from...alas, the formation of such for external groups to manipulate would be abnormal if it existed even if none sought to use it for manipulation.

Trend and trope crush substance and hope, GTFO out of my hobby and lay off the dope, anul anthrak, barra mass ssratu, abracadabra!

I listened to a bunch of Ginny Di videos while on a long drive today. I don't hear anything to suggest that she is fake as the OP suggested.

Her advice seemed mostly aimed at players more than DMs, and mostly on D&D but often generally applicable, and especially for  The topics I heard were about how to play, building character personality and backstory, and some about campaign building. I didn't see her bad-mouthing anything about different styles of play. She is very open that whatever works is fine, and that other people have fun doing things differently. She is open about being sponsored - usually by Kobold Press in the videos I saw.

I didn't get a whole lot from the videos, but then, I'm pretty far from the target audience.

Popular Youtube channels involve a lot of effort in filming, production, editing, and so forth. So I expect that product placement is pretty common. Pundit typically plugs his own publications, for example. I think he genuinely does believe that his stuff is great, and that material from the leading producer sucks. But he's also financially motivated to say that.

I think that she is pretty slick with production and topics, and she has a high comfort level with the script and camera. She seems sincere. My suspicion is that the 'fake' theory is rooted in the high production level. I mean, she inserts very well-produced music videos into the stream. She reminds of someone maybe inspired by The Guild. At 1m followers, there's some revenue streaming her way for the content she makes.

As usual YMMV. And always remember that great cartoon. No one on the internet knows you are a dog.

I'm iffy of people with obviously fake hair colors in general, regardless of sex.

I think it's sweet your grandkids taught you how to use the interwebz. :)

It's interesting that you think someone needs to be a Boomer just to recognize patterns.
I'm a middle aged guy with a lot of free time, looking for similar, to form a group for regular gaming. You should be chill, non-woke, and have time on your hands.

Maybe your grandparents could teach you how to usefully add to a conversation.

She doesn't seem fake to me. She's very much in a different headspace than I ever occupied, but that's OK.

I generally don't watch YouTube videos on tabletop gaming, so her stuff doesn't interest me, but I wouldn't shun her or anything.

My thoughts as well. I like her presentation. It is just that. Like I feel with Colville, they advocate certain playstyles and occasional attitudes that rub me wrong. Other than that shes fine, upbeat and is overall fun to listen to. Can not say that of Colville after a while.
