I may have said somebody of the community comes across as fake. Am I wrong?

This thread reminds me: remember the "fake geek girl" hysteria? Some geeks (some older dudes but also some younger women) posted their hatred of so-called geek girls who apparent cosplayed just to show off or something. That was one of the first SJW gamer online explosions. Of course all the SJWs instantly "forgot" that some women had been posting about this and presented it as solely as men attacking innocent women.

Who the fuck is Ginny Di and why should people care?

This... I've no idea who she is, really. I saw one of her vids and I turned it off after about 10 seconds. Not my cuppa'.

I think a lot of DnD celebs are fake as shit - Especially if and when they start e-begging.

So yeah, I may have said Ginny Di is coming across as fake and that she jumped on the D&D-bandwagon because it's now popular. It's a little twitstorm right now, I'm afraid. Am I the only one thinking she comes across as fake?

I've been accused of gatekeeping and whatnot. Is this where we are now?

EDIT changed spelling of 'populair' to 'popular'

I actually have some experience of this woman in that my partner has interacted with her. My partner is a cosplayer, I know there are a lot of fake geek girls in cosplay but my partner is perfectly normal and likes pen and paper RPGs just as I do. Giny personally gave her some advice to help her with the Tik Tok and instagram algorithms and produce better content. It was really detailed and informative advice too. She went to a lot of effort to help my partner. And we were both very grateful for it. I can't tell you whether she's fake but she did a good thing for my partner which she really didn't have to do. We've both interacted with actual fake geek girls and they've always been dreadful narcissists and very unpleasant to be around. Especially at cons. I didn't get that vibe from Ginny at all. She seemed alright. So I think she's genuine.

Well tbf, from this interaction she seems to be alright. So maybe she's cool...

What would fake be? Doesn't actually like D&D?

No, it's pretty clear that she likes (modern) D&D. She is primarily a cosplayer, and for her D&D is partially a vehicle for her cosplay. And she doesn't like the same kind of D&D most of us here do. And I don't quite understand why some guys seem infatuated with her. But she definitely seems to genuinely like D&D.

So no, AFAICS, not fake.

Edit: Here's her most recent video

- that's not a fake geek, that's just a different kind of geek from most of us.  ;D

If its 'who' I think it is she used to be part of "Not Literally" productions - they made fun geeky music videos and posted them to YouTube. The topics were Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and Game of Thrones.

Then she went 'solo' 4 or 5 years ago and I remember she and her boyfriend were posting 'how to' cokking segemts from the 'Dungeons & Dragons Cookbook' two or three years ago.

Fake, no.

Arrogant as hell with comments like prior generations just didn't get how to play D&D while teaching people how to play "the right way".

That annoys me coming out of people who promote playstyles I like, much less from people embracing a playstyle I don't. I don't watch her for that reason, but I have no reason to think she doesn't play and enjoy D&D.

If she is a Twitch Thot type trying to mine the 5e crowd, she's not very good at it (or is so good it's too subtle for me to get...I'm open to that but haven't seen how her targets are supposed to pay if she is).

This is the tell.

How does Ginny 'D' handle criticism?

If cries of sexism, misogyny and variations of: "hatred/jealous of me because I'm a woman" are her go-to responses...

Then that is a sure fire tell that she's fake as fuck.

If she's just like: "whatever haters..."

She's probably OK.

Of course none of those answers effect the Real scandal going down right now: Why does anyone here Fucking Care!?

Her business is social media, of course she's fake.

If a cute girl likes nerdy things, and makes money from that you should automatically become suspicious.

Nobody can stop her, but nerdom and hot bodies are damn near polar opposites.
I'm glad for you if you like the top selling game of the genre.  Me, I like the road less travelled, and will be the player asking we try a game you've never heard of.

Nope, you're wrong about that.

Over 17 years of working at a game & comics store I saw young womenm with 'hot bodies' quite often who were VERY into 'Nerd Stuff'.
I think you are working on out of date assumptions there.

There was one young woman in her early 20s who would stop in once a month and spend around 150 dollars on miniatures for a D&D campasgn she was running. One time she banned or 'ordered' her boyfriend to wait outside our window on a bench - because she didn't want him to see what monsters or adversaries she was buying for her group's next game session.

Never watched her stuff, though it frequently gets recommended to me on Youtube. Based on video titles and thumbnails, her stuff seems to be a mix of the same incredibly basic DM/player advice you can get from any of dozens of other channels, and engaging in what I can only call "D&D meme culture". I get that stuff is appealing to a lot of people, but it's turbo-cringe to me.

Is she a phony? No idea. Unfortunately, the state of the internet economy gives anyone with with a cynical mindset probable cause to be suspicious of any pretty girl making a living in the "gaming influencer" world. There is a definite financial incentive for attractive women to attach themselves to popular nerd subcultures, and it can be a route to (relatively) easy fame and fortune.

Based on what others have said about her, I would suggest that the answer can be both yes and no. I can easily picture a situation where she is a cosplayer who probably has at least a passing interest in roleplaying games. She has a "nerd stuff" channel, and at some point she makes a couple of videos about D&D. Those do well, so she leans into it, and before long that's her brand. She probably doesn't have zero genuine interest in the hobby. Frankly, there are more lucrative sectors of nerd/gaming culture she could get into if she only cared about getting views. But it's equally likely that her level of investment in it is played up more than a little for the camera.

For the record - I Do Not think that she is 'fake' - she is just maybe a younger bracket of D&D player than what many of you are used to.

She likes or loves D&D just as much as you do - she just got introduced to it more recently than you did.
Since her earlier geekdom activity was making videos - then that is her comfort zone to show her enthusiasm for gaming.

I'm iffy of people with obviously fake hair colors in general, regardless of sex. If it's a guy, he's probably a pedo, or at least has a sexual assault under his belt. If it's a chick, she's painfully desperate for attention (to the point she'll throw herself down the stairs and blame her partner for it)......... I'm only half-kidding.
