This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I know I should not love thee...

Christmas Ape

While I can see this thread dying pretty easily, I thought I'd throw a little bit of action onto this site in line with the new Love-A-Thon concept.

Anybody else got an RPG-related thing that they love despite it being almost 180 degrees from the rest of their tastes? Universalis/Theatrix devotees who actually play Hackmaster and love it? Hate fantasy novels, movies, and comics, but can't get enough Wilderlands? Find Romero a talentless shock jockey hack, but All Flesh is your daddy? Spend hours happily curled up with HERO 5th, yet harbor a forbidden love for Wushu? Now's the chance to speak up and be heard.

Naturally, as OP, I'll start. I'm a lover of rules on the light side of medium; True 20, Savage Worlds, Heroquest, that sort of thing. Even regular D&D has too many bells and whistles and dangly cluttery bits for me. But by god do I love the Mekton Zeta Plus Advanced Technical Manual. It's all book-keeping and math, yet it fills me with such incredible geeker glee that I consider it one of my favorite books of all time. Not just roleplaying game books; it's one of the better things with covers and pages I've ever owned.

Anybody else?
Heroism is no more than a chapter in a tale of submission.

Burning Empires.

It's about swiney as swine can get, but somehow I'm drawn to it. Funny thing is I hate the Duel of Wits and combat mechanics, but that is overridden by the love for the World, Tech, and Alien burning sections. :o

I really want to try playing or running Puppetland sometime.  It's creepy, experimental, and possibly too scary for me to enjoy, but I really like it nonetheless.

I don't know -- I have pretty wide-ranging tastes when it comes to RPGs.  I love everything from Iron Heroes to Wushu in terms of complexity.  Maybe something for me that would count would be Sorcerer and Sword, since I'm not a fan of Sorcerer (or Ron Edwards in general), but I think that it is one of the best resources for sword and sorcery gaming out there.

KenHR

Rezendevous beat me to mentioning Sorceror and Sword.

I have a serious dislike of most anime, but BESM 2e is way cool, and I'd love to give the game a spin one day.
For fuck\'s sake, these are games, people.

And no one gives a fuck about your ignore list.

The Shadowrun setting is a huge freaking ball of cheese tied up with a punny bow. Though I've long gotten past the "I know I should not love thee..." stage into acceptance.

So I'll have to go with http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2334 .  I've harboured some "like" of FR under all the "ick" , but I certainly wouldn't call it love. So by itself FR doesn't count. But sprucing it up the world with blinking LED platform shoes like did Willard sounds pretty off the wall fun.

And it wouldn't even take all that long to try out, since a single session always lasts only for an hour. From time to time I've run it as a filler game.

Now I can say it: I bought Vampire The Requiem. Hard-copy. And I, *sniff*, kinda liked it...

I have a very, very low opinion of most modern fantasy. I find scifi to be much more satisfying and stimulating to read. When it comes to RPGs, though, fantasy is the genre I vastly prefer to any other.

I have found most game-related novels to be complete shit, but Paul Kidd's "Greyhawk" novels are the exceptions to that rule, in my opinion.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

well, then I have second one.

I like gaming related novels, specifically Dragon Lance and Eberron. I know they are not the works of art that better authors write, but they do give me gaming ideas and entertaining.

Well, as they're a satire about gaming and not a "serious" novel set in the game world...
I liked 'em, searched for other publications by Kidd and bought "A Whisper of Wings". Which is about flying furries.

Flying Furries.

"BE"? Is that an abbreviation or a thematic game about existentialism?
