This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I just bought MRQII

I keep pondering this because of Wraith Recon...that just sounded cool enough to justify buying into the game on its own.

They are one the sweetest parts of the game, indeed. Regarding RQ3, I'm not sure that you can get enough of it. :D

Just won a few MRQ2 books on ebay so in about a week i'll be able to add Monster colossium, Empires and Compendium to my main rulebook that hopefully my girlfriend will have for me next friday all being well, got all 3 for the princely sum of £35 with free postage which is a deal and a half.

Seriously though: have you played both games? Why do you think I should give MRQ2 a shot over AHRQ?

Yes, the maneuvers are cool (I had my doubts at first, but they're gone now). Plugging them into AHRQ wouldn't be that hard, when I think about it. So .. I don't know.

I still prefer RQ3 over MRQII, it just feels better to me.

However, I have introduced Hero Points (from HeroQuest rather than MRQ) and am starting to introduce Combat Manoeuvres.

So, a hybrid solution works better for me than any of the standard versions.

That's what I'm starting to think. I just like the feel of RQ3 better: the presentation and layout (speaking of which: deluxe boxed set for the win), the list of skills, the resistance table, the presence of general HPs as well as hit locations. At the same time, there are elements of MRQ2 that are really cool and make me want to play it, no question about it. So maybe some targeted plugs are the way to go.

I think I'm pretty much where you are, only the other way.  I'm using MRQII as the engine and adding some of the RQ3 skills, and the year-by-year chargen system.  I haven't made up my mind about the resistance table yet.

I used the year by year creation system for my last RQ game and it turned into a horrific mess.

Yes, my players are simpletons.

So there.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

I remember, ages ago, using RQ3's chargen system as a semi-lifepath system, where you distribute N years across several professions, then multiply each number of years by the per-year/per-skill value, etc.

I'm not sure if that was officially allowed. I don't think it worked very well. It may have partly been because I was making older-than-normal characters.

Generally I don't think I've seen any game that does pre-game experience for older characters very well. (To be fair, Burning Wheel might. Traveller, I consider to be kind of a trivial case. Maybe Barbarians of Lemuria.)

Is that the same resistance table from the updated BRP rules?

Claudius

Wouldn't it be cool to have an edition war over MRQII and RQIII? D&D, Traveller, all the cool kids are doing it! :p :pundit:

Yes, the same one.

I have no idea. The table I'm using:

I also translated the French character sheet for AHRQ in English for use at my game table. I have the sheet from the AH boxed set as well, but I'm more familiar with that one, I think it's better organized, and I like the stick figures you can doodle if you want. To download them:
