This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I just bought MRQII

Well, I have finished reading it. I can only say one thing: the combat example is so fucking good I had to read it three times because I enjoyed it so much. The rest of the book is top notch, but the combat example got me saying to my missus on the plane back from Prague "This is what RQ is about."

Now I have to find a chance to test it, but this baby is next in my schedule.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

Hi all, just registered.
Anyway I've had MRQ2/Elric for a week or so now and very happy with it.
The combat manoeuvres give the game lots of flavor.

I had to discuss the charging rules a bit on the mongoose forum to straighten them out a bit with using a battlemat and tactical combat. But once that was sorted out it worked very nicely.

Hey Dansk,
I mostly lurk, but welcome anyway. Yeah, lots of love for Mongoose Rune Quest. I'm currently running another game, but its high on my list of 'next to run.'

I'm only doing test games with my son ATM of MRQ2 and the Elric setting.
MY regular group is with Pathfinder, but I'm trying to convert some of the players in my group to try out Elric/MRQ2.

I used run various incarnations of Elric/Stormbringer over the years in the past, so I'm fairly familiar with the Runequest game in general.

forgive me if this has been discussed elsewhere, but how compatible is the original Runequest material?  I have tons of the original Chaosium and AH stuff, but would like to have a modern, in-print rule set to refer players to.

I'm not expecting stat blocks to necessarily transition, but if I did my own conversions, would I run into any problems with, say, Borderlands or Griffin Mountain?

Welcome to therpgsite, Moonlapse Vertigo!

I think of MRQII like another game of the BRP family, not the same, but familiar.

It depends on the bits you want to convert. For example, if you wanted to generate viking characters for MRQII, you couldn't use the profesions of RQIII Vikings, since they are to be used with the RQIII rules, you would be better served with MRQII Vikings. On the other hand, monsters seem to be easy to convert.

I hope I answered your question.

I got Griffin Mountain and Mongoose RuneQuest II and would run both together. You can expect a strong similarity between the two game systems, so that the logics that sustain both are fairly close. The devil is in the details, however - the skills will be different, the details of the magic and combat capabilities will be different. Developing a familiarity with the new system, I think you could basically translate on the go, though exact accuracy in the translation would require a fair amount of work, basically restating everything.

So it'll mostly come down to your own personal GM modus operandi.

I always liked Mongoose RuneQuest II in principle, but I was a hard sell on actually trying it out, mostly because of reservations on the divergences in the combat system. My doubts have vanished at this point, as I can now see how, among other things, the maneuvers may enhance the game instead of framing it. As for skills like Resilience and the like, these are just aspects of the new game to get used to. MRQ2 is "cleaner" than old versions of RuneQuest. For some people that'll be an advantage, while others will see something lost in the translation maybe. I'm not seeing too many (any?) with the latter outlook on the new game at this point, however.

As someone who has just been using Pavis and Big Rubble as part of my ongoing RQII campaign then I can say it's possible to simply translate on the fly. The only thing I add is Strike Rank (and I usually just use DEX for that) and Combat Actions (1 for every 6 points of SR). Armour Penalty is usually close enough to be equal to highest worn armour.

If you need Persistence, Resilience or Evade I just do CON*3, POW*3 and DEX*3 (or Dodge). If a character is supposed to be particularly good then I make it *5 instead.

Of course, if you're into that kind of thing you can go over the material and revision the NPCs in RQII terms. If you take a look at Signs & Portents 90 I did just that with a couple of famous NPCs from previous editions.

Thanks for all the threads about this game recently as im aparently getting the core book as a birthday gift after talking about how cool the system sounds all weekend :)
