This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I don't care about the Gaming Industry.

Or it could be nearly every time I have played in a game you ran you have had my character grow an extra head. :P

I remember giving you a second head in Omega World. That's what you get for sleeping in an rampant medical center. I didn't actually give your WHFRP character a second head - he just thought he was growing one.

Good times, man, good times.

As you well know, sometimes the idea of something happening to a character can freak out the players more than the actual event.

Hmmm, maybe that is why there is so much spooked talk about the death of the industry. ;)

Yes they were.  And don't forget the dwarves in Moria one-shot using Feng Shui rules (at least that is what I think we used).  No extra head in that one either, but damn was that fun!

Yeah, that was Feng Shui. Spectacular death bonuses, anyone?

For some reason, and after reading this, I had the urge to run an adventure that includes Mexican dwarven masked wrestlers. :insane:

If all the companies that produce gaming material went out of buisiness overnight, and no companies stepped in to replace them, gaming would still go on. There's more than enough fans to keep the bigger games, like D&D, going in perpetuity.
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways, it's still rock and roll to me.

You can talk all you want about theory, craft, or whatever. But in the end, it's still just new ways of looking at people playing make-believe and having a good time with their friends. Intellectualize or analyze all you want, but we've been playing the same game since we were 2 years old. We just have shinier books, spend more money, and use bigger words now.

Such callousness!   :(

I care about the industry.  So much that it hurts.

i care enough that i would feel bad if the industry went under or something, but it wouldn't really affect my ability to enjoy gaming.
don't quote me on that.  :)

In this modern techno world a Games Company may just actually be one guy sitting at a computer. But, before the days of the internet, when if you wanted any FAQs or give feedback you had to write it down and post it off.

The only company I felt writing to was ICE (Iron Crown Enterprises) when they still had the MERP license and hadn't yet released RM 2nd edition. I guess they jumped the shark with their Spacemaster (althought very welcome) and jumped two sharks when they released Cyberspace.

Still, they were the only company I really gave a toss about. Of course they are not the same company now as they were 15 years ago - but what they hell.

Since their demise there really hasn't been a company like them to go in my heart any more. You try and wish each new company will bring you back. PEG tried with Deadlands and Driftwood with Riddle of Steel.

Isn't ICE still around?

Man, our experiences with Spacemaster and Cyberspace couldn;t be more different. We played the hell out of those things and loved it:)

They are still around, but, as Lawbag pointed out, they are not the same company. ICE went moribund for years, the name and IP was bought, and a new company formed from the ashes.

Playing SM hot after Traveller didnt really cut it for me, and while Cyberspace gave us some superb new critical tables, we were too busy playing Cyberpunk.

Heh, we didn;t find out about Talsorian's Cyberpunk for ages. We started what would become known as our "Cyberpunk Era" with Cyberspace, and segued into GURPS Cyberpunk.

Pretty much missed Talsorian's game entirely.

As for Traveller, we preferred Spacemaster by a mile. I think GURPS Traveller finallt got TRaveller right, the old system was, I thought, pretty half-assed.

I hear president Tim Dugger left GAMA!

*snicker*

Seriously, though, they are. Their game HARP (which is a fantasy RPG much streamlined and modded from a Rolemaster base), their current game, is quite good. It's just a pity that they don't have more money to spearhead a major print release.
