This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

A fact that's a bit ironic considering the direction of this thread--I purchased the first collection of those (in mass market paperback) based on the recommendation of Steve Miller ... who was working for TSR at the time.

And if Inphobia articles are still grounds for critiquing WW, should we start dragging out some of Gygax's rants about how "if you change the rules, you're not properly mastering the game of AD&D, and playing the game 'well' is the summum bonum?" :)

Some standardization in the #1 game is desirable but Gygax certainly went through his "Soup Nazi" phase there.

I don't think I'd agree that all rpgs are the same game but they're a narrower class than just board games and can even overlap a bit there sometimes.  I think broadly there's the more war game play style and the more storytelling play style.  Sometimes I wonder if there's a silly and a serious style too but I've never encountered the later.

Of course, if one wanted to model and categorize rpg-classes it would have to be done like the D&D alignment graph.

Nah, Stupid, Retro, and Pretentious can all exist in the same game in equal amounts at any level on the scale.  Theoretically a game could be infinitely Stupid, Retro, and Pretentious at the same time.  So while they're certainly measurable quantities they don't work when building a continuum.

I would say, curiously, that even the best 90s games seem more "dated" at this point in time than the best old-school games.  But that's a byproduct of the OSR's popularity.
