This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[OSR/Any] Infernal Creatures

I don't completely like the demons from either Eldritch Wizardry or the Monster Manual, and the devils from AD&D's Monster Manual presume you are using the ninefold alignment scheme instead of a simple Law vs. Chaos scheme, plus the whole Outer Planes/Big Wheel cosmology. I wanted my infernal creatures to live in the depths of the earth, no "other planes" required. And I wanted them to be  a little simpler.

I wrote about this a lot on my blog, but now I've edited and rewritten the material and added some new stuff, and put it into a free PDF download: Our Infernal Neighbors. I play OD&D, but it should be usable with just about any form of D&D. You don't have to abandon the ninefold alignment system to make it work. For  stuff like 3e, 4e, and 5e, you'd probably have to up the hit dice and damage, but I can't tell you any specifics for those systems. Maybe double the damage and add 10 to hit dice?

I included a random infernal forms table that I think is much better and quicker than the one in the DMG. You can roll four or five dice at once, one time, and get a complete infernal creature.

I'd be interested in comparisons to other OSR infernal monsters. I think most of what I've seen either assumes you are using the Monster Manual and just add more demon/devil types, or they just do a couple simple demons and call it a day.

Excellent work, thanks for sharing! I especially like what you did with the devils. Astral and Ethereal being only matter in another state of physical existence is a nice idea too.

Awesome!

I've always wanted to do non-Gygaxian, non-Great-Wheel demons and devils for D&D and I think you nailed it. Also love the Clark Ashton Smith touch with the slaadi-like "Saturnians."

BTW, I somehow missed that you're the Nine and Thirty Kingdoms guy (never clicked on the "About" tab until today) and I feel dumb. Great blog!

Thanks!

Yeah, this stuff was originally on my blog, but I compiled, edited and expanded it a bit. I think the part that makes me proudest ist the devils as cynical federal agents. They're not really evil, they just think you suck and want to prove it. It's sort of loosely based on the angels in The Prophecy.

Thanks!

I'm hoping the next one will be as well-accepted. I'm editing some posts I did about undead that increase in power, based on an old campaign that Old Geezer described. If a player character is killed by a vampire, they don't become a vampire, but a 1 HD undead that can grow to become a 7 HD vampire. If their flesh rots away before they reach a certain level, they become skeletal undead. I did four different "classes" of undead, plus a "vampire mummy" (basically, Mumm-Ra.)

But I may try to do an adventure about two-dimensional undead first.
