Title: How would you play Hunter: the Vigil?
Post by: KrakaJak on May 16, 2009, 01:12:05 PM
So...I still have this massive tome of Hunter: the Vigil standing unused on my shelf.

Why? Well, it's like 10 different RPG's all in the same book. It's effing massive.

I really am having a tough time deciding how to play it.

I'll give a bit of info on the tough decisions for those of you who don't have it:

Which Tier of play:

Cell - Non supernatural groups of regular people banded together to fight monsters. Suzy, Johnnie, a shotgun and a pick-up truck full of gramma's silverware turned buckshot.

Compacts - A loose alliances of multiple cells, supernatural elements are rare (usually artifiacts). Bob used to be a police officer, now he says he got a magic sword to help him kill the Demons.

Conspiracies - World monster hunting orginazations. Supernatural abilities are inherent in the characters (I shoot bees out of my wrists!). Put on your ether-goggles, we're going to roll some Coteries.

campaign style:

Monster of the week - Every week (or evry couple of sessions), there's a new monster to hunt down and kill. Black and white easy scenario.

The spiral maze - Players are slowly working their way to the center of a major monster conspiracy. Paranoia ensues.

There's always douchebags - The other hunter cells aren't seeing eye to eye. Political and social maneuvering and backstabbing as the cells compete for recognition and funding.

So, those are some of my ideas. Respond away!

I would try to incorporate it to my Paris by Night which revolves around Vampires and Mages predominantly.

As to how I'd do it, I don't have a clue as of right now. I guess I'm sort of in a similar position to yours, in the sense that the game includes so many different elements/ideas it's time consuming to choose what to use, what not to use, and then incorporate it to a working chronicle. It's rather low on my list of priorities, so I haven't given the whole thing a lot of consideration yet.

I am currently running Hunter: The Vigil.

A group of like-minded people (Tier One Cell) combat the supernatural as they find it.

The game's theme is turning into a monster so you can kill monsters, and so far they have been doing that very well.  The changing morality system is fucking awesome.

Do you watch the television series Supernatural? I'd run a game like that. Basically a cell with monster of the week with a sprinkling of larger things and possibly extra abilities with a price.

I've been wanting to run a game based on that show for a while and had contemplated using Hunter the Vigil while I wait for the official licensed game, but every time I look at the size of the book and just can't bring myself to buy it and read it.

I really like this new game. I ran a Hunter campaign last year but I think I'll do something a little different with this new game.

A comedy game. I recently discovered the BBC series Saxondale. So, pest control here would be the crew cleaning up after some mundane monsters of the week.

That's really funny. Dd you ever see the vampire episode of the X Files? If not, I recommend looking it up for inspiration on a comedy monster hunter game.

Edit: found some info on the episode: Season 5, episode 12 - Bad Blood

Oh yes, that episode was really funny and probably the tone I'm aiming for. Another episode, is Josie Chung From Outerspace...
