This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

How old were you when you started playing roleplaying games?

I was 12 years old, when I got the 1991 "black box" Basic D&D. I played through the solo adventure (each segment of the solo adventure taught a chapter of the core rulebook — best introductory product ever!) and in a couple of weeks I was drawing up, stocking and running my first dungeon. Good times.

12 exactly, game was run by my uncle for my birthday party.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

Sacrosanct

8 years old.  My 12 year old brother and his friends drew me in with B/X.  The rest is history.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

Doom

I got the Blue Box in '76, and still remember Dad wondering what I was working so hard on.

Despite not quite being 10, I did pretty well. The only major thing was I read the starting gold as 3d6 x 100, instead of x 10. But hey, so the fighters start with plate mail. ;)

"Gary's got this cool new game called Greyhawk.  You're a bunch of guys exploring an old abandoned wizard's castle full of monsters and treasure and stuff."
You should go to GaryCon.  Period.

The rules can\'t cure stupid, and the rules can\'t cure asshole.

Somewhere between 10 and 12, I forget exactly, but probably closer to 10.  Picked up Moldvay at a Walgreen's :D

I dunno... 8-10 for a few BECMI oneshots at school, 12 when I started playing regularly (Last Unicorn Games Star Trek TNG, and then D&D 3.0.)

Quote from: noismsI get depressed, suicidal and aggressive when nerds start comparing penis sizes via the medium of how much they know about swords.

Quote from: Larsdangly;786974An encounter with a weird and potentially life threatening monster is not game wrecking. It is the game.

I was 11.

1984 Marvel Superheroes Roleplaying Game Basic Box.

First character I rolled was an Altered Human with Enhanced Senses, Gliding, Claws, Ranged Attack: Stunning, and Air Control

Quote from: ExploderwizardStarting out as fully formed awesome and riding the awesome train across a flat plane to awesome town just doesn\'t feel like D&D. :)

I got Runequest 2 for my 13th birthday and then I had Basic D&D just before that Xmas (1982).

12, my sister brings me in as an extra player in her group because someone drops out.

Older brother introduced it to me by age 9-10. But then I was already digging through his fantasy & sci-fi book collection by then, so he thought it was better he introduce me than some stranger. Good idea, as what I saw didn't grab me at the time but removed any mystery in it and made related gateway products more attractive.
Just make your fuckin\' guy and roll the dice, you pricks. Focus on what\'s interesting, not what gives you the biggest randomly generated virtual penis.  -- J Arcane

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

1984 and I was in the 11th grade at Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale, CA.  The game I played was 2e Gamma World.
