How much did Faerun's Spellplague color your view of 4th Edition?

I picked the "a great deal" option just because I really disliked all the FR changes. It was hard to decide if it was a factor in my dislike of 4E since that was already over 9000, mind you, but IMHO 4E FR is effectively a different setting since they didn't just scrap everything (from people up to and including pantheon) and advance the timeline, they also retconned stuff all over the place (replacing the settings past history). All that's left is Driz'zt and some random place names.

Swiss Toni

Not a jot, though admittedly that's mainly because we hadn't touched FR for quite a few years before that.

I was more interested in how the changes inherent in 4e would effect Eberron, but those ended up working pretty well and I found 4e and Eberron to be a really good fit.

For myself, not at all.  4E was something I bought on a whim and immediately regretted.

I did enjoy a chuckle from 'We're going to put the focus back on the player setting wise by getting rid of all the uber powerful NPC's'.

Except the ones they're still making money off, of course.  God forbid the pointy ear bastard Drizzle or Old Man Pervy die off.

That'd make a good thread methinks.

I don't use Faerun so it didn't do anything to me. I thought 4E was crap when I read the rules for it.
"Meh."

Saladman

I'd never heard of the Spellplague till just now, so another "not at all."

And I gave 4e a good-faith try, I played in a campaign, but I decided it wasn't for me.  I don't know that a Faerun re-issue would have had any effect on that.

Caesar Slaad

Well, I did say that if I was an FR fan, I'd be pissed. But alas, it's a setting, so I didn't directly associate it with 4e.

What did rub me wrong and contribute to my disdain for 4e were changes to longstanding "metasetting" elements, I.e., archons became fire elementals in armor, dryads became treants with bewbs, changes to the outer planes and their denizens, changes to default playable races, etc. Those things made 4e seem less a new edition of D&D to me and more someone's fantasy heartbreaker with the d&d name slapped on it.

Running: Pathfinder Scarred Lands, Mutants & Masterminds, Masks, Starfinder, Bulldogs!
Playing: Sigh. Nothing.
Planning: Some Cyberpunk thing, system TBD.

I did not even know about the changes to the Forgotten Realms when I read the first three 4e books, played in a couple of games, and decided it was the worst edition of D&D yet made for the type of play I enjoy.

Quote from: Viktyr Gehrig;632324Didn't have any effect on my disdain for Fourth Edition. Single-handedly responsible for my decision to stop reading new FR novels.

The post-spellplague novels didn't seem to be much more than uninspiring generic fantasy stuff with the FR logo slapped on.

If one removed the Forgotten Realms + D&D specific names from these novels (ie. filing off the serial numbers), I wouldn't be surprised if nobody gave a damn about such generic stories.

Many of the changes made were annoying to me.

I assume they were ignoring older players and hoping to gain many young people that had no concept of the established lore of dnd.

Drohem

Not much really; I was already apprehensive of 4e D&D because of the rule changes to the D&D brand.

I've said from my first encounter with 4e that Wizards would have been better off naming the game something else rather than D&D 4e, because it was such a break from previous editions.  I don't think the game is bad, per se, but it's definitely not D&D as I know it.  And that's what annoys me about the game.

Reckall

I had a very low opinion of 4E rulewise, but it was based on the previews and my distaste was limited to the rules. I bought the two FR 4E books while vacationing in Washington D.C., thinking that, in the worst case scenario, I could still use the fluff.

I left the two books in an airport bin when I took the plane back to Italy. 'Nuff said.
For every idiot who denounces Ayn Rand as "intellectualism" there is an excellent DM who creates a "Bioshock" adventure.

Not at all.

The only Forgotten Realms that exists is the old Grey Box. Anything after that isnt Forgotten Realms.

I found that bringing my old school dnd mentality to 4e worked.

Not a fan of healing surges though.
