This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

 Married couple, 1 kid .

They went to Indy for all  4 days - during the day time the husband got to wander around GenCon, shop for games play demos....the wife visited her relatives, went to museums and tourist spots with their kid. At dinner each night they would meet back up for a meal as a family . He had fun, she had fun. They worked it all out ahead of time.

What if your wife OK'd the trip - what would it take then?  A place to stay?

I'll be there, with the Epic crew.  We're gonna run games and demo through the day and, uh, run games and demo through the night.

That sounded much better when it was percolating in my head. :o

I used to play RPGs pretty regularly up to roughty 1991, and I only took the hobby up again since I've been married, so I could use the earlier period as a control. What comes out of that is: I've never attended a gaming convention more than a couple hours' drive away--probably the farthest was in Pennsylvania or Delaware when I was living in the DC metro area. Nowadays if I was inclined to attend a big con, I'd probably go to Dundracon or Kublacon, or maybe something in the LA area, but the idea of flying all the way to Indianapolis is just too far out for me. I have both friends and relatives scattered around the country, a few more on other continents, plus some places I'd like to visit just to be a tourist. I can't see using a precious vacation "slot" (time off from work, travel hassle & costs) for a con. Not to mention the game stores here are very well stocked with new stuff, and there are even a few "small" cons throughout the year if I'm looking for events.

So basically, as long as Gencon's a plane ride away in a city where there aren't any people or attractions I can think of to otherwise justify the trip, we're talking "wait until I win the lottery".

Once, just ONCE in your life you have got to go. It's like Mecca, except you get to circle around Gleemax.

Well, I circle around the exhibit hall, but it really is Mecca for gamers.  It's the highlight of my year, game-wise, and tops of anything not involving my wife and daughter.

OK, guys, I can sort of see the lay of the land here.  Let me break off to another thread to discuss this further.

Dr Rotwang!

So long as I work for the cable company, job which pays very well, I can only go on Sunday.

Why?

Well, I live in a college town.  In August, college students come back to town.  They want cable.  There are a LOT of them.

Mandatory overtime, no time off.

Quote from: KoltarI can't go into too much detail - but because of the Klingon Jail thing, I'm able to go to GenCon at all. Its like a trade off thing similiar to what the GMs and volunteerrs get.

If it wasn't for the jail activity - I doubt I could afford to go at all. Its also , in a smallo way, what i'm able to do for charity each year. In the early '90s I was healthier and had more energy - did a LOT more events like that.

I would LOVE it if more of you guys could make it there.

Heck, would love to actually sit down for a few hours and game there next year.

By any chance, did you ever appear at a small game/scifi con at Wright State University's student union?
