This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Oh sure, point out the obvious. :p  I am at work anyway, I don't have any here.  I will check when I get home.

I don't have the faintest notion...what with the ENnies and Staff Reviewing it must be in the bazillions though.

Not many.  I really don't care for reading RPGs off the computer, and I find the PDF to be more of a pain than the book, even with a laptop at the table.  So I only get PDFs of books I actually own, and therefore consider them legal.  Sure, I downloaded them off P2P sites but since I own 1) the book 2) a full version of Acrobat and 3) a scanner, prove I didn't scan it myself.  Fair use, bitch.  :p

I keep them around because it's handy for a quick reference while working on a game, I can keep copies at work, and I can keep the handy charts and stuff up while the game is going on.  Still, if there's no dead tree I'm not using it.
I have a theory, it could be witches, some evil witches!
Which is ridiculous \'cause witches they were persecuted Wicca good and love the earth and women power and I'll be over here.

I'm with you I prefer teh actual books.  But for reference purposes I'd rather just use my laptop rather than haul 30-40 books around.  Plus with money being tight often buying the pdf is often much cheaper.

Ragnarok N Roll

Downloading PDF's off the internet is a lot like jerking off. Everybody does it, nobody ever talks about it. The ones who loudly proclaim that they would never do such a thing are usually the ones who jerk off the most. ;) :D

Interestingly enough, the ones I value the most aren't the ones I would use for my game. The ones I use with any regularity I just buy.

The ones I really value are the old, out of print ones, the ones I'm never going to find for sale anywhere.
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways, it's still rock and roll to me.

You can talk all you want about theory, craft, or whatever. But in the end, it's still just new ways of looking at people playing make-believe and having a good time with their friends. Intellectualize or analyze all you want, but we've been playing the same game since we were 2 years old. We just have shinier books, spend more money, and use bigger words now.

Yes this is the same way I am.  I was very glad when WotC released some of their 2nd Edition stuff as free downloads, I just wish they would let the entire 2E catalogue out like that.  PDF's are the only way I have some 1st & 2nd edition stuff.

it annoys the hell out of me when some companies charge for pdf's of games that are 10+ years out of print, or from 2-3 versions ago and so on....

A couple of years back Bastion was being paid by WotC to turn their back catalogue into pdfs.  That were then sold for a very resonable price, like $2-$3 a piece.  Jim Butler was very enthusiastic about the project.  Unfortunately  about a year after it started it seemed to have been stopped because of budget cuts. :(

Yeah, despite that, though, an avid fanbase has managed to turn many of those old edition items that never completed into PDFs.  I don't think the Netheril Box Set was ever PDFed by them, but the scanners out there did.  Wizards has Netheril: Empire of Magic for download, but that is just a sourcebook.  The box set had nifty maps and such in it (that were scanned by fans, also).

Maybe not legally, but morally, I consider there to be a big loophole for products that are long out of print, either totally unavailable or selling for 10 times its original price. If anything, it's archiving the game and keeping it the gaming consciousness.

10-15 years ago, I photocopied a few rule books that couldn't be found.  Now, I would have found them online.

I'm nearing 2K pdf's on my HD.  All sorts of stuff like freebies of Exalted and the new WoD, to all sorts of D20 material.  The full set of the MSH line is my favorite part of the collection, though.

I have the Nethril: Empire Magic Supplement but I never remember a boxed set.  And I have pretty much everything for FR that they ever put out in 2E.  I don't ever remember seeing anything about a boxed set for Nethril.
